I recently purchased a wood splitter that runs off the tractor hydraulics. The control valve can either be configured as a "open center" or "closed center".I will be using the quick connects for the FEL to power the splitter.I understand that I will need to hold the joystick open with a bungee to send fluid to the splitter.Which configuration on the splitter control valve will I need:eek:pen center or closed center? Thanks in advance for any replies and advice.

You will want JJ answer here. The tractor is supplying the hyd fluid it is going to depend on the tractors pump set -up. I have quick connects on my Kubota loader the fluid going into the front loader goes back to the log splitter and comes out of the open center log splitter and dumps back into the front loaders hyd. tank. If either quick connect is not correctly seated it blows the pump on the front of the tractor up... You need to know both the tractor and the splitters make up.

Your tractor has an open centre system with a (fixed displacement) gear pump. In other words, the pump keeps pumping all the time the engine is running, so the fluid has to keep circulating through an open centre valve back to the tank and then to the pump again. If the valve is set up for a closed centre system, the fluid will dead end when the valve is in neutral, causing the relief valve to open (and over-heat the fluid) or (in the worst case) cause something to break - like a cracked pump or valve body.

A closed centre system has a variable displacement pump that shuts off when the closed centre valve is in neutral.

Are you talking about a log splitter valve?

I have never heard of a log splitter valve that can be converted to open or closed center.

It is either one version or the other.

If you put air to the IN port of a closed center valve , it will be blocked in neutral.

Since your tractor is an open center hyd system, you want an open center log splitter valve.

I have this identical splitter on a L3240 setup with open center, the manufacturer gives you the closed system spool parts for the valve. I had the dealer pipe into the power beyond ports with a bypass hose when the splitter is not in use, works very well.

I looked at the parts list for that log splitter, and it is an auto return valve.

They say it has the closed center kit included.

However, they do not show the parts breakdown for the valve or the model number.

There is not a return psi setting to neutral.

This is not your standard log splitter valve.
