2N
Hello, I just bought my first 2N tractor. I can raise and lower the rear blade in neutral. When I am in gear I can lower the blade but not raise it. Anyone ever experience this? I have tried it with the PTO engaged also.

Thanks, Tim

The PTO on a 2N MUST be engaged to operate the 3 point arms.
The clutch MUST be engaged for the PTO/3PT to work.
When "in gear", you may raise the 3pt ONLY while in motion.

Yes. LD48750 is correct, and it's working as designed. The PTO and hydraulics/lift will only run when in motion, or with the clutch out and trans in neutral. There is also a sub forum for those old Fords. www.tractorbynet.com/forums/ford-vintage-tractors/

I had a 9N for quite awhile and they are great (considering when and what they were designed for).

This is why I bought a Yanmar YM2310 and am selling my 9N. The 3 point hitch.

So I it does work as gstrom99 and LD48750 stated but is very very slow to raise. in neutral it raises pretty fast. is this normal or is there something else I should be looking for. It is a bit low on fluid would this cause it to be slow? And I mean very very slow.

More RPM's will speed it up.

I usually lift it then go to where I am going to use it and drop it AT SPEED and work it.
Not as easy to use as a 70 year newer unit but VASTLY better then horse drawn as was the norm of the day.

My 2N gets used almost as much as my newer (1986) tractor.
Just takes time to get used to it.

DO NOT pay attention to the dipstick, remove the lowest bolt in the side cover the dip stick is in and fill the housing until the oil just starts to run out. The old Ford uses 90 wt. mineral oil or you can use 80w/90w gear oil even though many say not to which is BS. Anyway using the lower hole it will have all the oil it needs, the reason for doing this is on the old 9/2N tractors filling up the housing can cause the wheel seals to leak. The seals on these old tractors were not the best unless someone has had it apart and upgraded them.

It probably seems slower due to your moving while lifting vs sitting still since your attention is on multiple things. As long as the throttle is at the same setting it should lift at the same speed moving or sitting still.

Compared to most newer tractors your 2n 3point will always seem slower when raising.
If it’s cold when you start the 3point will be extra slow for about the first 20 minutes until the oil actually gets warmed up so it flows better, the colder it is the longer it takes for the oil to warm up, it’s ok to use it with cold oil, using it will actually help the oil to warm up a little faster.
I plowed my pretty large yard and driveway with a 8n for over 30 years.
Mine was starting to have shifting difficulties a few years ago so I checked the oil and it was about it was about 2 quarts low so added oil and it has been shifting perfectly since, I prefer to use the dipstick but I’m sure the remove the cover bolt method that John0829 mentioned probably works fine as well.
