Hello Gang,
My 2910 seems to pick-up speed when BHing down the back of the dam.
This evening I was in low range started down thing going OK (slowly) then all of a sudden it seemed like it jumped out of gear and the brakes did not seem to slow the speed. Was not far from the bottom so no harm done but I did not like the feeling when I romped on the brake and did not slow down.
After that one pass I put in neutral and let it roll back and the brakes seemed responsive.

Any suggestions as to why we went free wheeling?

Thanks a bunch.

I had my 2910 pop out of gear while I was mowing the other day. Scared me, I thought I broke my best buddy, then I looked down at the lever and saw it had popped out of place. The only thing I can figure is that I didn't engage it fully when I started out, and it vibrated out of gear.
Every time the manual says to check the brake adjustment, I have had to adjust mine. They certainly aren't the best brakes, and if it pops out of gear, you can't put it back until you stop, and you can't stop until..... /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif.....well you get the picture.

I just had another thought ( I know, dangerous). Flip your lever up that holds both brake pedals locked together and see if one pedal will depress lower than the other. If they don't go down to the same level, you are engaging one brake more than the other and that can reduce your braking power by up to half.
A simple adjustment will get them back in synch.
Good Luck

Were you in 2WD? Keep in mind that the brakes are on the rear wheels only, unlike a car which has 4 wheel brakes.

The brakes and braking effect of the transmission (are you HST?) are only as effective as the rear wheel traction when you are in 2WD. I've had the rear wheels start to skid in the past and you effectively lose all braking. It's quite alarming and sounds like what might have happened in your case.

In any adverse consitions, use 4WD. In addition to providing 4 wheel propulsion, it makes the brakes 4 wheel as well.

Gotrocks,

Is there a chance you started sliding on wet grass or something? If it is a common thing for you b2910 to pick up speed when backing down a hill, that in my experience is not normal. It is a safety issue. I would get my dealer involved pronto. Could be an accident in the making.

I have used my B2910 in low and mid range a lot on slopes. Nothing excessive, 20 degrees max, and mostly 15 degrees or less. Up and down mostly...sideways on the slopes scares me so I avoid moving sides ways across the slopes as much as possible.

Anyway, if I stop on a slope and then leave my foot off the brake the tractor may drift VERY slowly, but it does not run away or start to go faster. I have total control when backing or going forward on the slopes. NEVER experienced what I think I hear you saying you do.

As far as the brakes go, I don't trust them that much. I hesitate to stop on a relatively steep slope to change ranges, so I wait for a flatter spot for my range changes, or rest my loader bucket against a tree. I fear the brakes might not hold and that I mmight find my self in neutral...heading down the hill. They do seem to work fine if I stop the tractor on a hill and set them as parking brakes. So I just may be overly cautious.

Thanks for all post to this question.
I have just gone back and tried the same run with 4wd and that seems to solve the "run-away" bota. My "BHing" was not to be construed and "backing" I was "Brush Hogging" down the back of the dam but going forward. I would never choose to back down that slope.
While checking the brake petals I notice if I press the right one down the left will not go down until I release the right; however, when I press the left petal then I can press the right at the same time.

Now to see if I can keep up with the undergrowth and the "overgrowth" with my 5ft Howse. With all the rain you can almost hear the grass squeeking it grows so fast.
