I'm always amused by the concept that government subsidies prevent farmers from going broke
. I suggest that those who believe that start farming for a living. We'll see how long they last.

If you want to do this start with good old tractors cheap machinery and learn how to keep them running. Don't mow too much at 1 time so if you break down you don't lose your whole crop till you get the hang of things. Around here you could be in the hay making business for under 5000 dollars, But nothing is gonna be shiny and new.

I'll add to that, there is NO money to be made. It'll take all of it to make machinery payments, keep things running, and maintain the property.
