I am expecting a dirty filter but thought I'd ask about anything else before I drain everything. Can't imagine why the filter would clog because early last year I cleaned the filter and changed the trans oil. The filter wasn't dirty then after a few years.

Late last year I was very slowly backing down a very steep hill with the bushhog, I stopped, put the shuttle shift in forward, and nothing, no go, nada. I pulled it up with my other tractor and on the level everything was perfectly functional. A half mile later I was going forward up a steep hill, I stopped, and it repeated, no go again. Pulled it up again, went again for about 100 yards on the level, now it is 100% dead on the level, including the 3 pt. The engine runs fine, oil is/was full, there has never been any sort of strange sound, when it works it is 100% full strength... but now it will not shuttle forward or back in any manual gear, the 3 pt is down dead.

My understanding is the shuttle clutch and the 3 pt. work off 2 different pumps. Any other ideas other than the tran filter?

Not to my knowledge (which is wery little:D ) Same pump .If the 3 pt won't work & your power shift won't work I would say check pump or pump key

276 (US market) has engine mount pump and pwr shift pump(inside tranny) My guess would be low fluid or stopped up spin-on or enternal screen filter. (both pumps share resevoir)(trans housing)just my guess?

I changed the spin-on hydraulic filter and cleaned the screen filter in the tranny both at the same time that I changed out the tranny fluid. It's weird that the shift and lift would go at the same instant. The fluid level is definitely right on.

I think the spin-on filter only supplies the 3 pt. Does the screen filter supply both the 3pt and transmission pump?

I'm wondering if because of the high angle of the tractor on the slope that some sludge got dislodged and clogged the screen filter. Maybe this weekend I'll drain and remove the screen filter. Just wanted to avoid doing it in case there was something external I could check. The tractor is in a field about 8 miles away so it just isn't convenient to be draining the transmission and crawling under to get to the screen filter.

Try this first, run @ low rpm with clutch in remove tran dip stick let out clutch(be careful fluid might splash out) and check flow.Should be healthy if not,
could be bottom screen? funny you don't get pump(engine mount) noise??? OH, make sure valve under seat is open.

Should be?:
Screen filter is pre- Spin-on/ supplies eng. mount pump(suction/same line)3pt&pwr shft same oil source . redundant
I change spin-on often(easy) w/out changing fluid. extends time on cleaning screen(pain). After thinking:confused: about it, It is indeed WEIRD that you lose 3pt&pwr shift??? 100% blockage on eng. mount pump flow should not cause pwr shft failure?(pwr-shft oil source in tank/trans housing) While peeking in dip stick hole(while in "N")/should see oil flow with clutch in or out, gears rotating when you let out clutch? If in gear "1" and no rotation when you let out clutch, that means clutch(behind eng.)slipping. Let us know the results of your detective work this week-end? Got me curious??

I'll have to let you know later. Went over to the tractor to find the fuel bowl split, must've froze. Have to order a new one and I'm traveling for a couple weeks so it will be a few weeks till I get back to it.

Your 276d shares a suction screen with both the hydraulic system and the powershift. No doubt your problem is a plugged screen. Drain the hydraulic system then remove the screen behind the cover on the lower left hand side of the transmission housing. This cover is round with a pipe plug in the center. The cover has two bolts holding it to the case. Wash screen in solvent and blow debris from the inside out. Fill with HyTrans oil and you will up again.
Thanks, Green Hornet
