I have a 2640 and need to remove the Roosa Master JDB fuel injection pump. The person that will be rebuilding it suggested that before removal the tractor be TDC, to be sure it gets placed back exactly the same way. I have removed the timing pin and have tried to turn the engine using the starter and attempted to place the pin into the small hole at the bottom. This just doesn't seem to work. The shop manual suggested turning the engine over by hand until the pin drops in. How do you turn it over by hand? The rebuilder also suggested that I remove the timing window and let the gas drain out, then turn the engine over until the timing marks are aligned. Is one better then the other? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Check with the JD dealer for an Engine Rotation Tool. You mount it on the left side and it has a gear to rotate the flywheel and a pin to lock 1 cylinder at TDC. Before removing the pump look for timing marks on the block plate and pump outboard mounting flange. There should be a timing mark on the plate and the pump.

Thanks for the info. I called the dealer and they said that as long as the pump and block are marked so that they line up it should be ok. The rotation tool is about $100 and they said they would have to order it and cant remember ever selling one?

You really should get timing pin engaged in the flywheel and align the marks in the timing window before you remove the pump. If you only mark the pump and block, you risk installing the pump 180 degrees out of time. You should be able to turn engine over using the fan blades as a tool. Unhook the battery cables first. Remove the hood and stand on the left side of the engine. Grab the top fan blade and pull toward you. If the belt slips, put thumb pressure on the belt to help tighten it while you turn the fan blade. Have someone else push in on timing pin while you turn engine so pin falls in hole in flywheel when it aligns. Then remove the timing window on the pump and see if those marks are in alignment. If one mark is not visible, then you are at #4 tdc instead of #1. You will then need to turn engine over one full revolution until the pin falls into the hole again. Then it is safe to remove the pump so it will align properly when you reinstall it.

Thanks for the info everyone. this forum has been very useful for first time tractor owner. I got the pump off and rebuilt. The pump came with new umbrella gaskets to place on the shaft. Does anyone know how to put these on? Do they just stretch over the shaft? and do you need the umbrella gasket compressor (DB # 13371) to put them on without rolling. Thanks again for evryones expertise.
