Mahindra 2615 HST w/ FEL
I have a 2005 Mahindra 2615 HST w/ fel. It has 390 hours. Recently I have noticed a slight whining sound in the transmission when the clutch is engaged, more so in cold weather. The sound tends to diminish as the tractor warms until it is almost inaudible. I have not had any issues with it ever whatsoever and may be simply over reacting. Is this a normal sound for a tractor my age?

Have you changed the hydraulic fluid & filter lately?:D

If it has recently gotten worse it may be just the colder than normal weather we are experiencing in the south. Fluid gets thicker and takes longer to warm up. If the filters are getting close to the recommended service interval they could be causing more restriction and contributing to more noise in the cold weather. All hydrostatic transmissions do make more noise the more you load them. The oil in the gearboxes and grease in the bearings is thicker in cold weather so there is more rolling resistance when trying to move the tractor. Since we can't hear it the real question is how much more noise? Does it seem excessive compared to before? If it were mine unless it was excessive I wold just chalk it up to cold weather since you said it goes away when it warms up. I might change the fluid, clean any strainers the transmission may have and change filters for piece of mind. If you do change the filters and got curious about metal in them you could always cut them apart and see what they looked like.

I have the same tractor but an 04. The HST does whine quite a bit when cold (pretty much all winter). The loader also works slow for the first 10-15 minutes until the the fluids warm up. It does quiet down some as it warms up. I usually give mine a 5 minute warm up before taking off to plow snow. I have changed all the filters and fluids but mine has always made a whine when cold. A friend has an 06 and his is much quieter in the same outside temps. As far as I know everything is the same just different years. My 04 only has 373 hours. Someone once told me there is a restrictor or maybe an inline screen somewhere in the hydraulic system but I haven't found it.
