New member to the site. I have a '08 2615 Gear 4WD w/R4 tires and want to know if anyone uses this tractor to plow ground, if so, what plow recommendations. I have a 48" tiller, but would love to be able to turn over the clay soil once a year and then disc it up.

Also, not getting any younger and tired of wrestling with hooking up implements. Any suggestions for a quick hitch attachment for this tractor. Waiting on my dealer to get me a price on the Mahindra model.

Thanks
Bob

Howdy Bob,

I've pulled plow with a similar sized tractor back when they were called Cub Cadets. My advice would be to pull a singe bottom 18-20" or a double bottom 12-14". Of course that all depends on your soil type, incline, and moisture content at the time.

I now own an 2006 2615, and pull a double bottom 14" in the spring when it's "dry" for spring time but the soil still holds lots of moisture from the winter. Loamy clay with few rocks in this area. A double bottom 16" may be too much, and even a double bottom 14" is all she wants in tough conditions. If you have easy soil, you may be able to get away with 2-16s.

If I were spending money, I'd go for a double bottom 14". You may find a big single bottom in the 18"-20" range but they are rare, and do not lay the soil over as well when compared to a two bottom plow. A single 16" is safe, but tedious. Good sharp coulter discs placed at the right depth are KEY to performance on any plow. Don't go without them as they will ease the load on your machine.

As far as a quick hitch, I'm in my mid 30s and happy to wrestle with the implements as opposed to the cost.
I'm sure as time goes on though (if my father is any lesson) I'll be glad to see replies for the right quick hitch.
In the mean time, find a good plow and store lots of fuel. Our country, currency, and economy are a mess.
Be glad you have land and a tractor. Like Josey Wales, "hel!'s comin' to breakfast"!

I agree with MichiganBilly, I had a 2615 gear and pulled a 2 bottom 14" plow. It worked the tractor pretty good, I dont think you want to go any bigger.

I have 2615 gear. I have yet to pull a plow with it but I do have speedco quick hitch. The quick hitch works with my Rhino rotary cutter and I have modified my box blade to work with it. Next on my list is the tiller which will require a little more work. The speedco is probably not the best made hitch but it sure saves the back. I hated wrestling with the box blade before the modifications.

Thanks to all who replied. I agree with MichiganBilly times they are a changing. I am going to turn 60 next year, retired from the Army in 1994 after 25 yrs, 10 mos and 9 days, not that I was counting. And have spent the last 3 or 4 years working to become more self sufficient. We have a small amount of land (would like a little more), have a 1 acre garden, 50+ hens for fresh eggs and hope this next year to add a calf or two and a hog to support our meat needs.

One question for each of you: do you have ag tires on your tractors to pull the plow? I have R4s, hoping they will provide enough traction. I am still amazed at the power this tractor has, I have did things with it that totally amaze me. With the grader box I have brought the front end off the ground a time or two pulling huge rocks out of the ground, but it got the job done.

Thanks again for taking the time to respond. New to this site and so far I love it, there is a lot of information and it appears a community of really good people.

No, I had the r 4 tires as well. I noticed that they are not the best in many situations, however I use my tractor for mowing the yard also. So it was a trade off for me.

A plow similar to this should work fine behind your tractor. Ford 2-14 inch with modern 3 piece setup. Ken Sweet

I have R4s and have been pleased with them as long as working dry dirt. Once it gets muddy they slick over easily. If I ever buy another tractor it will have ags.

I can't speak to the plowing, but I bought a quick hitch with my 2615 4WD and like it a lot.
Pat's Easy Change System - Category 1 - 2

The only bad thing I can say about it is it required a longer PTO coupler on the chipper.

Just found an old Case 2-16 bottom plow for $100. A little rusty, but will clean up just fine. Shears and cutters in good shape. The guy said try pulling it and if it works you can pay me for it. Well, to my surprise the 2615 4WD Gear pulled that plow with no problems at all. Hoosier clay soil that has not had any rain in almost 2 months and it still turned the soil over very well. Will spend some time this winter cleaning it and giving it a paint job.
