I've been reading this forum for some time but this is my first post. I purchased a cub cadet 2550 with the Kohler Command engine earlier this year. When I did my first oil change, I discovered that 2 quarts of oil actually overfilled the sump by close to a pint, even with the longer oil filter. Since the manual says two quarts sump capacity, I'm wondering if the dip stick is wrong or is the dip stick who wrote the manual wrong. Anyone have a similiar experience?

My 2550 is the same. You've to to figure that there will be some left in bottom of crankcase and some in the oil cooler. I just fill it right to the full mark on the dipstick and call it good.

Merlin - When do you check the oil? If you wait a few hours and happen to have a filter with a leaky anti-drainback valve the level will show high because of the oil that has drained back from the filter into the crankcase.

I have an external oil cooler on my 2554 and use a Wix #51056 oil filter. If I change the oil and add exactly 2 quarts, then make sure I check 5 or 10 minutes after shutdown, the engine shows just slightly overfull.

I figure being slightly overfull is Ok since the oil cooler and lines also drain down after shutdown and will need to be refilled on startup.

My command 18 calls for 1.9 quarts, and sure enough 2 full quarts just barely over-fills it.

I wish they would have found room for just .1 quart more :) Oh, well. It's a good time to refill oil can!
