Tractor
2520 compact
Was moving hay today and my tractor died half way to the barn and wouldn't start back. Checked fuses and all the fuel lines to make sure nothing was stopped up every thing was good. Tractor will start but dies soon after it starts will run on starting fluid so it leads me to think it's a fuel problem. Was reading some post from 2019 a fella was having the same issue a Mr Kdunn I believe it was. There was mention of fuel selenoid. Could someone tell me more about this and where it is located. This may be what's wrong with mine. I really need to get this going it's the only way we have to feed hay at the moment. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I assume this is a John Deere 2520 compact. The fuel solenoid is attached to the fuel injection pump. I will provide a link to the parts diagram and hope it comes up ok. It is part #29 in the diagram. If it has 2 wires it is easy to test by putting 12 volt to and if it clicks it is usually ok. If it is 3 wire than there is a holding circuit and you will want to test the relay as well.

If it starts and runs for a while it might not be the solenoid. You said you checked all the fuel lines and flow was good. Have you changed the fuel filter lately? Also check to see if the lift pump is working properly. You are on the right track looking at the fuel side of things first.

Hope this helps!!

John Deere 2520 compact is correct. I'm going to change the filter in the morning and the link will help a lot thank you. I will post any findings in hopes it will help the next person with this same issue.

If your having a hard time running wire to the solenoid to test it.. u can unbolt it..it’s just a couple of 10mm bolts.
Check your fuses too.
BTW.. the fasteners are metric..
Good luck

10 4 good info. I checked all the fuses and I bypassed the the safety under the seat thinking that was the issue, before I ruled it a fuel problem with the starting fluid. Its beean a dandy little tractor this is the first issue i have ever had with it. I bought the tractor new in 18 its been Barn kept and serviced regurly. I'm new to the group and you all have been great I just hope I can as much help when someone else has a issue.

FYI, I was told by many folks to never use starting fluid in my Yanmar tractor because it can break the rings. You may want to consider this before you use starting fluid again.

MPartin you need to get a service manual and a parts
list just for the reason your having! A volt/ohm meter is
a must! Harbor Freight is a good place to get a cheap
one that's all you need so if you don't have one $10 or
less at HF for one. Youtube has a good video on how
to use one if you never used one hope this will be some
help.
Also you haven't told us where us is

Replaced the fuel filter still the same result starts and dies has good fuel flow all the to the injector pump. Took it apart fou d all the diodes I could. Picture A only the one in the middle of the two went to the pump and it checked good the others in the picture were good as well. Picture B had the big blue wire from the plug to the selanoid not sure how to check this one. Picture Chad the orange wire from the selanoid plug not sure how to check this one either. Picture D is of the plug to the selanoid I ran a hot and a ground to the plug. Grounded the top flat prong and a hot to the two side by side prongs only one prong activated the selanoid. If no one knows how B and C should be checked and what it should read I may go to JD and ask the, but they are not friendly when it comes to giving out info. Thanks again for all the info and help y'all are a good group a guys.
