John Deere 2520 with 200CX loader, x320
I recently purchased a 2006 2520 with very low hours. It came with a loader and I need to purchase a good rotary cutter, perhaps used. I will be mowing 3 - 4 acres of sloping, fairly rough pasture every week in the summer. The tractor has liquid-filled tires and an iMatch hitch. I've been looking at Frontier mowers, particularly the RC2060. Is this a good choice or what might be better. I expect to spend $800 - $2000. I have experience only on Fords when I was a kid and on my x320 which is not equal to the pasture mowing.

Every week? Sounds like you'll only be cutting 2 or 3 inches off the top. I'd go with the 62 MMM. Or extend your cut interval by a week or two. Congrats on your new tractor!

also look at brush hog and landpride. they make good rotary cutters.

Sam - you have a good choice in selection of Frontier equipment. I also have one. Only comments would be the size to beat fit your tractor and doubt that you would need to cut that often with an RC.

I have a 4520 with a 60" and for me it is just right however I could easily power a 72".

To another posters comments a mmm may be a good choice if you have good contour and not too rough.

If you are cutting on slopes and mowing this frequently I would consider the mmm for your tractor as it would be more stablle. Normally I would suggest getting something to smooth out the areas that are rough but you do have to be careful what you do because of erosion problems. Not knowing more details about the property it is hard to make a good suggestion but generally I suggest a two prong approach where you can perform mowing on a regular basis and smoothing, seeding, contouring and improving. I say this because I wasted alot of time mowing and fighting the terrain in my back yard before fixing the real problems. It used to take me about three or four hours to mow down and fight the obstacles and was a real pita. Now it takes about an hour to mow and looks way better.

A rotary cutter for pastures is better for heavier duty jobs and less frequent cuttings at higher cutting heights. While good to have it would depend on the slopes and setting you have whether a 2520 can handle a 5' rc without to much tail wagging.

I was first thinking that I would need to go with a 4' for my 2520 but the dealer said that it would handle a 5' easily. So I went with the 5' Frontier and it works great. I also have a 5' Land Pride on my Ford 1710 that I bought new 20 years ago and I have beat the heck out of it and it is still working great. Never once has let me down and I cut a lot, for a while I was doing a lot of side jobs with it as well. I don't think you could go wrong with either of these choices.

The 62D MMM gives improved visibility and maneuverability when mowing around the house. If you are cutting pasture grass, the RC2060 would be the better choice, plus you know it will fit your iMatch.
