I have a Woods T50 50" rototiller that I used with my Ford 1520. The rototiller is recommended for use on a 15 - 25 HP tractor and it has a slip clutch. Is it okay for my brother to use this tiller on his Ford 2120 which is a 45 HP tractor? Will the slip clutch on the rototiller protect the tiller from too much power? If not, is there a slip clutch or something else that one can buy that would protect the tiller?

Pardon my ignorance and thanks for your help!

If it has a slip clutch make sure it is adjusted and slipped correctly... and just take it easy..

I borrowed a tiller from a friend, I think he has around a 30hp Kubota, I have a 45hp MF. I used it for a little bit and then ended up splitting the PTO shaft at the slip joint, the clutch never slipped. It may have been that the tiller sat further away from my tractor then his, but that is the last time I borrow a attachment, cost me enough to replace the PTO shaft, I should of just rented one.

If the slip clutch is adjusted, I really don't see why it would matter.

Yes, but you're not going to like the price. See 8254174 AX4 480MM/19 1 3/8 QRSPL X 1 3 - Agri Supply (plus freight). And don't bother shopping around, cuz AgSupply has about the best prices going for PTO stuff.

If you do swallow the price, adjust the clutch to slip at 25hp. That way the 45hp tractor can't wind up the 25hp tiller tranny too tight. Instructions on how to do this should be included. If not, I can help you out there too.

I agree for the most part. If the slip clutch is adjusted properly or the right sheer pin is used you should not have to worry as long as the operator knows what they are doing, otherwise the weight of the bigger machine might bend something when/if he turns or is not going straight when he drops it.

If the tiller has a slipclutch and it is known to not to be siezed up and is properly adjusted, buying another slipclutch is a waste of money. The slipclutch will protect the tiller from too much torque input, but your brother must be careful not to let the slipclutch slip to the point of ruining the friction discs or warping the pressure plates and heat damaging the springs. There is more chance of clutch damage than tiller damage.

Wow, replies 3 years later !

My brother has used the tiller a lot on his 45 HP tractor with no problems.
