2420 or TN70

Ok... just getting ready to acquire 40 acres next to my current property. Will total about 45 acres. It is primarily crop ground, rolling hills. Putting about 15 acres into pasture and then the rest will be used for alfalfa and crop. Won't be a lot of tillage at any one time. Primarily hay. Will rotate sections periodically into other crops then back to hay ground. Will be doing primarily small bales. Will do the tillage work with the tractor and get my neighbor to combine.

Got a TC33DA now and obviously need to trade up. Looking at the T2420 and TN70, cab models w/loaders.

Got my ideas on which would probably be better, but wanted to bounce it off of the other members here and see what would be the better overall choice, both from a cost standpoint as well as functionality. Would be open to other models as well. Don't have unlimited resources, but need to make the best choice.

A utility tractor (the TN) is SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper to run in the long run.
You can put much bigger implements on it (less time running overall) and the maintenance intervals are much longer. Most compact tractors have 300 hour maintenance intervals. The TN has 1200 hour intervals.

In the long haul, that's going to be a LOT less money.

BTW, the TN75 is the same tractor as the TN70 but with a turbo, so when you bog down.... Just a thought, prices should be similar.

Thanks. I was siding that direction and appreciate the confirmation. Hadn't started talking with my dealer yet. I like to have more opinions than just a dealer!

Agreed from top to bottom. A Class IV for these uses is a knife to a gunfight thing.

I just noticed you want to run hay with it. You do NOT want to run hay equipment on a compact tractor. It will literally beat it to death. It's not the HP, it's the gearing and drivetrain.

Put the TN and the 2420 next to each other, then walk around back and compare the size of the rear gearboxes.

You'll immediately see the difference

FYI: The TN70 is turbocharged as well.

Thanks for all the feedback! I was looking at PTO horsepower alone. I knew I could get some good feedback here to help the decision process.

Pick one with enough gears. I have the 8 spd (4x2) trans in my TN55. I haven't used it enough to worry about it (yet), but I will probably wish I had gotten one with another speed range. Still a lot more tractor than the TC line. 1/2 ton truck versus a 3/4 ton truck. And man is that cab sure nice!
