John Deere 2355
Hello All

Have been viewing the forum for some time as a guest and have found that there is a great deal of knowledge/experience here. I have been experiencing problems with the three point on my 1989 John Deere 2355. The problem is that the three point will raise, but will not lower. The problem is intermittent and may go several days without a repeat. I have adjusted the rate of drop as well as the draft control with no success. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I am thinking your problem is in the rate of drop thumbwheel. My suggestion is go to JDparts (link provided), where you can get a picture of how it looks and part numbers if needed. Make SURE you have the attachment on the ground and remove the rate of drop and see, if rust or dirt is in there.

Rate of drop screw tightens a ball(parts key #8) in an orifice and I find it difficult to believe that the R-O-D mechanism is the culprit. Where is the L/D control lever under positioned? My guess is L/D control linkage needs to be adjusted following instructions in a JD 2355 service manual.

To Jim the L/D control had been at every setting with the problem persisting. I set the L/D control lever to the max setting and backed the ROD wheel all the way out and the links will lower now, but as I said it seems to be an intermittent problem. I guess I will have to see if this changed anything. Thank you for the quick replies.

Sounds to me like a internal linkage problem. My suggestion would be to follow the adjustment procedure in the manual to the letter and in the exact order that it is listed. If this does not improve the issue and the lift arms do not respond according to the manual when the Lift/Draft is in the various positions then the linkage needs inspection. I have seen bent linkage from being put back together wrong (compare the linkage to the drawings in the manual) missing pieces, the spring not connected and other various screw ups. Also if you take the rockshaft off make sure and replace the sealing O-rings in the valves (very common failure) and adjust the valves while the valve body is off. Way easier than trying to do it through the pipe plug after you put it back on. Good luck but make sure to do all the adjustments before you do diagnostic surgery.

For all applications except plowing the L/D control lever should be in minimum. As I stated other than slowing down the speed that 3 pt drops the R-O-D screw has very little to do with the 3 pt operation. It's possible that the clearance on the valve operating linkage is too much which would be correctd if you adjusted the L/D mechanism as outlined in a JD 2355 service manual.
