2320 PTO stuttering

I'm having a issue with my 2320 pto when i turn my tiller on without it even touching the ground it stutters and makes alot of noise. When i do put it on the ground it stalls and start clanking and banging away. Now the weird part. I took it to a friend who is a mech and showed him the problem he said he didn't have time that night and would look at it in the morning. He started it up and nothing works like a champ thought ok maybe when it warms up it would do it again. Nope he tilled his tree farm nothing. So i take it home use it for a couple months lots of tilling and still nothing until last night. Same thing stutter and stalls tiller, Motor keeps running. oil lvls are fine bucket hyd work just the pto even when i switch to the mid pto with nothing on it still sounds bad. Any help would be Greatly appreciated

Hard to tell from your description. But I'd try the "friend" again and see if he can put the magic spell back on it.

Does if has a slip clutch?

Make sure the battery has a good charge. I know when my battery is low ...my pto will not engage. So...just a thought?

Just out of curiosity when you have the engine off can you spin the PTO spline freely? Also when you are engaging the PTO are you engaging it at PTO RPMs? I know a lot of people just run the tractor up to PTO RPMs and engage but never have an issue but for me with older tractors I've always had better luck getting them to engage at a lower RPM but these were gear transmissions with levers not electronic switches so Im not sure how how much this will relate.

Also could the seat safety switch be causing the issue? If it was faulty I believe the PTO wouldn't engage at all though.

I think with mine I engage at high rmps or pto rpms....pretty sure I read that some where before?

Ok so i checked the battery it is fine. The pto engages fine at either full pto rpms or at idle. Its not seat related as the tractor stays running and i have tried it with me on the seat and with the park brake on and me off the seat.
It is almost like the pto solenoid is starting stopping the pto really fast. Its getting dark here so im going to check for a short in the wire going from the switch to solenoid tomorrow. Anyone have a idea where the solenoid is located it would be alot easier to pull the plug and check with a meter than to trace the line.
