gx255
Currently have gx 255 with 54" deck. Was thinking of upgrading to x585. After reading reviews I'm starting to think about the 2305. My question is does the 2305 and x585 have the same wheel base. Would like to stay with 54" deck because of some tight spots (mowing between things). My brother has a x485 with 54" deck and he has no problems mowing up close to trees with smaller deck vs 62". Would the 2305 be the same wheel base as x485. Also what is the independent lift option on the deck? What are some prices that peoplke have paid for 2305 with cx loader and 54" deck in Minnesota. One last question can you get hdap tires for 2305 like on x585, or would you recommmend bar tires. Wondering if bar tires would tear up lawn when turning?

I traded my X585 w/54" deck for a 2210 (same as 2305) and put the same 54" mmm on the 2210. Works like a champ. The 62" deck would give you a better uncut turning diameter if you could fit it in the places to mow. The deisel and the increased versatility makes it worth trading! There is very little difference in overall size but you do sit higher and the wheelbase is about 1"-2" longer.

Not sure on the wheelbases - that info you should be able to find on johndeere.com.

For the money spent on an X series I would really consider the step up to the 2305. If you can get by with a 62" deck I would get it - it keeps the tractor further away from obstacles (trees, shrubs, etc).

Independent lift is an option (about $300) that would allow the user to lower and raise the MMM using the loader joystick; otherwise it's tied to the 3-pt hitch lower/raise. Most here have not gotten it (I didn't).

If your primary use is mowing I'd go with the turfs. The "bar" tires are more aggressive tread and folks have reported mixed results using them on their lawns in tight turns; some get some damage some don't. Guess it depends on the condition of your lawn and the type of soil.

I paid $12,780 for my 2305, 200CX loader, 62" deck, 4020 Ballast Box and light guards. That was pre-tax and delivered. If you go with the 54" deck you should come in a couple hundred less than that.

Call around to the JD dealers that are local to you - you'll probably see quite a variance in price (I know I did - about $1.5K).

Good Luck!

Comparing an X to a 2305 is very hard because the frames are night and day different in terms of strength. The 2305 is a utility tractor and the X is a premium garden tractor.
I'd forget about the X, because the 2305 is so much more capable as far as attachments go.
I mow with my 2210 (same as 2305, just a couple yrs old now) :D
Its a blast, but remember the **** roll bar is a major pain in the azz if you trim close to trees and stuff like that.

ROPS can be replaced with a foldable ROPS if that's a big issue. I know I've had to do some trimming of trees since I got my 2305. Guess they needed it anyway. :)

I think to keep in mind is what are your tasks for your property. Do you need a loader and 3 pt? If not you may be very happy with the x series. It will pull attachments and mow with the best of them. I don't think it's cost effective to upgrade the X to 3 pt/PTO and loader though.

Cast and Blast,

I agree who doesn't need a loader at some point. That's what kind of swayed me to a 2305, this tractor has capabilites to add attachments to. Might not buy all attachments at once but look forward to adding attachments in the future. 90% of the time the tractor will be used strictly for mowing. I have a lake home that has a big lot with lots of trees so majority of the tractors work load will be there. I currently use my gx255 at the lake and at home on a smaller lot and also mow grandmothers lawn which is decent size.

My big decesion is what tires to use. Cast and blast you have turf tires, will you run out of traction or power when using your loader? At my lake home I would use loader on the beach leveling sand and also some dirt work. On the x595 you can order what they call hdap tires which are a knobbier (sp) tire. but are still considered a turf tire. I think rim and tire size are the same for x and 2305 tractors has anybody tried them?

I know 2305 is a little bit of an overkill for a tractor and my wife will fall over when I tell her what it cost but it's hard to send a farm kid to town without his John deere toys!!!

Someone on TBN has HDAP tires on their 2210. I recall that they like them. I had HDAPs on my X585 but now have the R4s on the 2210 and they work great for both loader work and mowing.

Redmx -

Sounds like you're on the right path (in my opinion).

Turf tires - yes, I can run out of traction but it takes some doing. In 4wd, Lo range with 600 pounds of ballast on the back it takes quite a bit to stop this thing. It's a remarkable tool in a realtively small package - it's got attitude.

Good luck!
