May 2007 I bought a new 2305 John Deere. I like this tractor and use in daily to weekly in the summmer, weekly to monthly in the fall/winter. Winter 2008, I first experienced that it would not start.....I got nothing and the dash lights I recall were dim. The only way I was able to start it was with the help of a battery charger in "Engine Start" mode. If I went out the next day, it would start right up but if I went out a week later.....I got nothing. In May 2009, just before the batteries 2 year warranty, I brought it in, they bench tested it and it tested fine. I reinstalled it afterwards and I continued to use the tractor 3 months straight on a daily schedule without any issues. I let the tractor sit straight for 2 - 3 weeks in September and went to start it.....I got nothing. On October 15th, I had the dealer out, they checked the tractor out and installed a brand new battery. Tonight I went to start it...I got nothing. What it draining these batteries down? I leave lights and ignition off. Is the alternator functioning properly? What things can I check? Any advice/suggestions would be great.

I'm wondering if the battery is drained or you have a loose connection. At one time some of the JD cuts were noted for having battery corrosion problems.

A volt meter is very handy for these problems. There are multimeters at Home Depot pretty cheap if you don't have one. The best way to check the alternator is measure the volts on the battery while it is running. It should be around 13.8 to 14.2 volts.

I would check all the connections to the battery. be sure the cables are not corroded where the attach to the lead lugs. If you have a volt meter check the voltage on the battery posts when you try to start it and see if the battery is going down. If the post volts are OK and it won't start you can check the voltage on the cables to see if it is lower. This would confirm a bad connection.

If the connections are OK and it is draining down, the fastest was to isolate it is to put a current meter in the battery cable path and see how much it is drawing. You can pull fuses to fine the offending circuit. DON'T try to start it with the current meter in place.

do check the battery connections. the terminals on mine looked ok but were
cracked at the terminal loop thus the wire ga is not enough for the need current to flow

napa has quality replacement connectors behind the counter for your existing cable - do not use the card pack units on the sales floor

My 2210 also suffered the JD dead battery syndrome - replaced with a yellow top

napa has quality replacement connectors behind the counter for your existing cable - do not use the card pack units on the sales floor

also check your starting procedure as frustration leads to forgetfulness - the equipments knows when you are not affectionate

remember seat safety switch - can be jumped with a piece of 14ga solid electrical wire - for testing only

verify transmission in neutral

pto not active

fuel filter, fuel filter fuel filter, as winter nears have a spare and the propane torch for thawing paraffin in the fuel filter holder away from tractor

i have had no problems with paraffin melting and diesel fuel igniting - remember safety equipment and not inside a building

Love her and she will return the favor

Getting the service manual shows commitment and you will be rewarded as you can see the best $42 ever - way cheaper than diamonds

Check the alternator output, ground connections and check for a ignition off draw.
