According to the manual I should change the oil and transmission fluid every 200 hours. It makes no mention of time. It has been a year since I changed both but only about 70 hours of run time. I am inclined to change the oil but do I also need to change the transmission fluid? That is a bigger job and it is awful cold out these days.

You are fine to wait on the hyd. oil until you reach 200 hours - there is an "annual" replacement for the trans/hyd oil.

FWIW, I have the 2210 and I change the engine oil/filter every fall when the mowing season is over and before the snow flies - I run 50-75 hours per year so I am way under the oil change interval. I changed the trans oil after the break-in period (50 hours for first hyd change if I remember correctly) and again at 200+ hours, about 3 years after the first hyd oil change.....

Thanks, That is what I was hoping. The mowing season and snow flying seem to have met here. Still need the mower deck to pick up the leaves. I have been running it every weekend. I have a lot of trees and it just got away from me this year.

Just winterized the boat in the snow flurries tonight. Not fun, at all.

According to my manual, the service required at 200 hours is an engine oil change and filter. Transmission oil doesn't get changed until 400 hours.

The last statement in the servicing engine section states to change the oil and filter yearly if less than 200 hours a year use. So, my take on it is by time -- 200 hours or more -- or by the calendar -- every year unless used more than 200 hours a year.

Service Intervals
Servicing Your Machine

IMPORTANT: Avoid damage! Operating in extreme conditions may require more frequent service intervals:

· Engine components may become dirty or plugged when operating in extreme heat, dust or other severe conditions.

· Engine oil may lose efficiency if vehicle is operated constantly at slow or low engine speeds or with frequent short trips.

Please use the following timetables to perform routine maintenance on your machine.

As Needed

· Replace alternator belt.

· Replace air filter elements.

· Replace light bulbs.

· Replace fuses.

· Clean and replace battery.

· Replace radiator hoses and clamps.

· Check tire air pressure.

· Clean fuel tank overfill reservoir.

· Drain water and sediment from fuel tank, and service water separator.

· Check and clean front grille screens.

· Check and clean radiator cooling screen.

· Clean debris from engine compartment.

After First 10 Hours

· Check wheel bolt torque.

Every 10 Hours or Daily

· Test safety systems.

· Check engine oil level.

· Check transmission oil level.

· Check air filter rubber dust unloading valve.

· Check radiator coolant level.

After First 50 Hours

· Change engine oil and filter.

· Change transmission oil and filter.

· Clean transmission suction screen.

Every 50 Hours

· Check front axle oil level.

· Lubricate machine.

Every 200 Hours

· Change engine oil and filter.

· Inspect alternator belt.

· Check wheel bolt torque.

Every 400 Hours

· Change transmission oil and filter.

· Clean transmission suction screen.

· Replace fuel filter.

Every 600 Hours

· Check engine low idle speed.

· Check air filter intake hoses and clamps.

· Change front axle oil.

· Check brake adjustment.

Yearly

· Change engine oil and filter if less than 200 hours of operation.

· Drain water from fuel tank and replace fuel filter.

· Check all hoses and clamps.

· Check battery electrolyte level.

Every 1200 Hours

· Check engine valve clearance. See your John Deere dealer.
Every Two Years or 2000 Hours

· Flush and replace factory coolant. Flush cooling system and replace coolant with John Deere COOL-GARD engine coolant.

· Service fuel injection nozzles.

Thanks, I could not find that in mine, but I was planning on changing the oil anyway. Cheap insurance and I run it pretty hard. The bigger job was the transmission.

As a side note, Funny thing is I have an old Simplicity Lawn tractor that I inherited and the transmission fluid had not been changed in at least 12 years. I contacted Simplicity tech support which I guess is now Briggs and they told me not to touch it. I guess if you miss it by that much you should just leave it alone. However with the JD I will change every 200 hours. Big difference between the two machines. One is worth $400 at most and one is worth way more. ;-)
