400 hours. Dropped the 2.5 liter GL 5 gear oil out of front axle( middle and final drives). Looking at front axle and tie rod diagram I had on left side some corrosion and dirt under no.7 gear case and under bracket no.6. Turned out no.20 seal was worn out.Not good! JD had seal in stock, so this happens frequently!!?DIY: to take bracket 6 off I needed to drop tierods on power steering cilinder and tierod assembly. Untied the nut(31) but left it on while I hammered with pin on tierods. Unbolted gear case 7 from front axle pulling it straight off ( a shaft is loose sitting in axle. If it comes out remember how it was sitting in there). Now whole thing on workbench. Unbolted bracket 6. Cleaned bottom 6 with brake cleaner, put on bottom 6 that connects to 7 heavy duty grease. With mallet dropped gear case 10 (hub)out off gear case 7. With slide hammer pulled sleeve no.18 and bushing 19 at once. (remember how far it was in it)Removed with slide hammer broken 18 seal. Bearing race 22 didnt roll good, carefully removed bushing of 22. Took some rubber seal out! Put bushing back in.Clean rest hub with brake cleaner. Greased 22 heavily with bearing grease. some permalink blue gasket sealer on new seal 20. With huge socket put sleeve 18 back in ( with some heavy duty gasket sealer, shouldn't wobble. Now and this is important. Put gear case 7 in vise (shaft up)and feel if shaft 17 fits snug. If not. Put finger in bottom end 7 and move kind of washer till shaft falls in place. Have some help sliding gar case 10 back on ( in upside down position, so shaft stays put). Bolt bracket 6 back on. Bolt 7 back on axle ( check if shaft in axle rolls good). reconnect tie rods. Add some oil in final drives and then in middle axle. GL 5 at Walmart gallon $13. Total 2.5 liters. Let sealer dry overnight before running it. While at it, remove your rubber boot behind front axle. Clean the u joint ( rubber boot collects ton of dirt, not good) and grease it!! Next day run your tractor and check your dipstick.
