I know that JD recommends a 4' rough cut mower for the 2210/2305.. But I am wondering something.. My dad and i have a 790 (30 hp) with the 513 mower (5ft). When I am mowing i have to have some overlap to get a good looking cut. I am assuming this is normal.

Since I am already overlapping some could I use a 5' mower with the 2210/2305 and end up with like a full 4' swipe?

Just wondering

I know I used a 5' cutter on a Deere 670 (which had about the same PTO HP as the 2210/2305). The 3PH capacity is there (2210: 700#, 2305: 681# (surprising...2305 is less then the 2210)), but those tractors are only twice the weight of the cutter, so I'd be mighty careful if I had to transport the 5' cutter (probably 600# to 650#) in the raised position!

So, can it be done? Well, I'd give it a try rather then buying another cutter. I'd only cut if the growth isn't too thick or high.

Why do you want to use the SCUT to cut instead of the 790? That 790 is a great machine for rotary cutting.

My dad and I co-own the 790 and he lives about an hour from me and my wife and I just bought 7 acres of land and going to start building a house soon. Dad is 75 yrs old I am not going to take the tractor away from him (he is the neighborhood snow removal guy and garden plower). I wanted a 2305/2210 mainly to mow the yard (will ultimately end up with about 3 acres of yard), fel for helping in yard work, and rough cutting the rest.. I didnt want the 790 for mowing the yard due to the size and weight.

Try it out, but I agree with Roy, the smaller tractor is a bit light in the shorts to move it around. However, as you mentioned, you can narrow the width of the cut if the grass is heavy and you are lugging the tractor.
I think I would opt for the 5' if I could get by with it. Maybe transporting with the rear tail wheel off the ground just isn't possible, and that would just be one limitation of what you could do.
I don't think the Deere limit to 4' means you can't run a 5'. I suspect they don't want to say 5' and have a customer come back and complain and whine about the limitations that 'he didn't know about' and 'should have been told about' yadda yadda...........we hear it on this forum all the time. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

"Maybe transporting with the rear tail wheel off the ground just isn't possible, and that would just be one limitation of what you could do."

Except for the rare times I transport my cutter (a 5' Land Pride weighing in at 600# or more) over pavement or other hard surface, I normally leave the tail wheel on the ground. There's an area I have to drive upslope (across a finished lawn) and it's safer to leave the tail wheel on the ground. Plus, I don't want to get off the tractor to shorten the upper link of the 3PH.....being the lazy guy I am.

As far as mowing with a 790...I do finish mowing all the time. It's not really too heavy, but does require a bit more finishing work with my walk behind mower.
