I bought a used 2166 day beforeyeasterday and when I brought it home I was checking the engine oil and transmission oil also, when I pulled the transmission dipstick out a clod of grass about big as your small fingernail fell into the fill hole on the hydrostatic transmission. I was gonna change out the hydro fluid in this mower anyway and the filter also, is this clod of dirt and grass gonna mess my hydro trans up? What do I need to do, I ran the mower after it fell in for about an hour or so, its doing fine so for. This mower has 216 hrs on it, runs woderful, gonna put Castrol Sentec in the engine for my oil, do these Kohler engines last a pretty good while, never owned one before. I was also wondering if these transmissions last long also?

Always blow that area off before you pull the trans dipstick. I would have tried to shop-vac the junk out of the dipstick tube before popping the stick back in, but you should be protected by the trans filter. All the fluid goes thru the filter before hitting the hydro drive.

The small bit of debris will not likely ruin your hydro. Run it for the season and change the fluid out, just a good idea anyway for the hours.

Your 16 HP Kohler Command single in the 2166 is a great small engine. You do not need to use synthetic oil in it unless you really wish. If you change the oil and filter on them every season, you'll see the oil will drain a fairly clear coffee-brown, never black. Just change with a good brand of dinosaur oil and a new filter and it will go and go and go for a long time to come.
