If you haven't built before you may want to look at a "turn key" kit. You pick the size, the materials, and they send all the parts you need. Many even supply nails for your gun etc. There are several online or many bigger lumber yard (not box stores) locally have kits too. Carter Lumber is all over and still has kits I beleive thought I have never used one of theirs.

If you need 20 x 30...build at least 30 x 40. AND if you need 8' height...build 9 or 10. As soon as you build it you will get another toy, or a higher ROPS, or some new project and need more space.

Good luck.

I built my first barn in 92. I just drew it up on legal paper, because I used the lines as 2' marks. Anyway, I took it to several lumber yards and they figured up a materials list and gave me a price on it. I than bargained with them all to get the best price. Once you get a material list, it's easy to go shopping. I built it 30 x 40 x 12 and used rough poplar for siding. It took 90 days, which put me up into December. The following summer I added 16' to one side to feed cattle out of. I also used rafters instead of trusses, just wanted more room for hay.
I've got some plans around here somewhere if you are interested. They are 30 x 40 with trusses on 4' centers.

Hey Namvet, how is that poplar holding up on the side? Did you paint it or stain it? My lumber yard quoted me .50 a board foot ($4) for a 1x8x12 poplar. Not to bad. I checked the metal prices today at my supplier in TN and WHEEEEEEW was I hammered. It has gone from $1.66 a LF to 2.09! That is an increase in a cost of my roof by almost $500. I gotta buy soon!!!

I had priced the roof for my barn from a TN supplier. They were very nice, helpful, and had a great price....but when I called to order the price had gone up about 30%. I rechecked my lumber yard about 1.5 miles away...they weren't due for a price increase for about 4 days ...so I ordered! I also found that their trim pieces were a fair amount less. And all those trim pieces can add up fast. So I was happy I could now "afford" to support my local guys. This metal is going up like crazy...but so are shingles.

Here's the layout for the 20x28 shed I'm building for my haying implements.

It's a simple design using dimensioned lumber and corrugated metal siding (3 sides) and roofing. Figure there's about $3500 in material cost here. I'll park the hay baler, grain drill, hay rake and the sicklebar mower inside. I'll build another one next year for the Mahindra 5525 tractor which presently is shedded in the garage/workshop.

Most pole buildings are on 8' centers for the posts, so you dont want 20x30. You want 24x32, 24x24, 32x32, etc. I would go 32x32 or 24x32, depending on your wallet size. Always get more space than you think you need. 32x32 is really only a large garage when you think about it, and we all know how easy it is to fill one of those up.

6x6's for the corner posts and 4x6's for the side posts is plenty. Add three feet for the distance the poles go in the ground. My barn has a 4-12 pitch on the roof, which is nice and easy to shingle. 5-12 isnt bad either, with more storage room in the attic and less bending over to do the shingles.

24" centers on the trusses is plenty strong for most applications. I did my side purlins on 24" centers which worked fine.

For a tractor barn 10' sidewalls work for small tractors, if you plan on getting a full size tractor go with 12' walls. Go 10' wide on your main door, its nice for backing things in.

I bought the rough cut poplar at a local sawmill for .39 bdft but that was in 92. I left it rough cut and it weathered to a nice grey color. I haven't had a problem with it.
