I just bought a new 2016 2032R. I have a Woodmaxx WM-8H chipper on order that hasn't shipped yet. I'm wondering if the electric PTO engagement will be too "abrupt" to spin up a 200 lb rotor, and the tractor engine will stall. Does anyone have experience with that chipper and an electric PTO engagement? With my old TC40D and Bearcat chipper, I could ease in the PTO lever at idle. Also, that was only a 120 lb rotor.

Getting a little concerned that I ordered too large a chipper, and wondering if I should downsize to the TM-86H

Thanks,
John

That would be a good question to ask your Deere dealer. My opinion is that the electric PTO should handle the start-up load.

But I also like the ability to ease in the PTO clutch which I can do on the JD 4300.

I hadn't thought about that. It might be okay initially, but I wonder how that will affect the longevity. My first concern was it will flat out kill the motor. As a side note, I sold my old tractor and chipper (TC40D and Bearcat 5" hydro feed) to a friend. He has a small Massey that can't run it. Every time he tries to engage the PTO, it stalls the motor. Even with the TC40D, I would engage very slowly, at idle speed.

This brings up a new question. What's the method of operation behind the electric PTO? It must move a lever or something. Does it just slam it in, or what?

I don't have a lot of hope that they can answer the question, but I think I will call the dealer. If the PTO engagement is too fast, it's going to be one huge shock trying to spin up 200 lbs from a dead stop.

I have electric PTO on my JCB and it was able to start a PTO post peeler but it certainly knocked the motor down some when I flipped the switch. I always did this at idle but it might be necessary to bring up the RPM's a bit before you flip the switch.

Called the dealer, and they referenced me to JD tech support. So, I call them, and explained my concerns regarding stalling the engine when trying to engage the PTO with such a large load. He took my number, did a little research, and called back after talking with a few other people at JD. Their statement was it shouldn't be any problem at all. The PTO has a wet clutch engagement, and it's designed to slip on engagement, and should not stall the motor. He recommended engaging the PTO at idle (owner's manual agrees), but he also said he was told it could handle being engaged at full throttle! Not sure I want to try that. In a nutshell, I was told the wet clutch would allow engagement without a sudden shock, and the PTO system is quite robust. I guess I will see in a couple of weeks.

That is how my jd 2720 pto works. It starts my 6" BearCat chipper shredder at an idle without laboring.

I finally finished putting the chipper together, running it for the first time today. Looks like 23.5 PTO HP can start a 200 lb rotor without a problem. I engaged it at idle (~ 1300 RPM). It definitely "lugged" briefly, but didn't miss a beat. I chipped a few small "sticks", maybe 1" to 1 1/2" diameter, and five feet long. Tomorrow I'm going at the big pile.

The 3-point lifts the 900+ lbs without a problem. Here's what it looks like hanging on the back of the tractor:
