2021 Branson 5520H
Hello all,
I'm hoping somebody can help me sort out this craziness I've been getting some pump whine lately, and was getting ready to figure it out, when I found out there might be a hydraulic screen before the filter. I checked he service manual and the hydraulic one line shows a screen before the filter. It even supplies a part number for it. The hst model image has the same 2 symbols but is not labeled.

So I ran to the store and got hydraulic fluid and drained my sump then pulled the suction tube from the sump to the filter. There doesn't appear to be a screen, I bought this tractor new it had 250hrs and this is the first time I've looked for a screen to clean. It is mentioned as a strainer about 5 times in the manual but it doesn't provide any details about the location.

I guess the question is does any one know if I should keep looking for this thing or if the hsts don't have one.

Thanks all in advance!

It is my understanding that the gear tractors have them, but the hst ones don't.

At least my 25 series hst does NOT have a pre screen.

Is this whine new? Is your suction hose perhaps sucking in a bit of air into the system? Have you changed hydro fluid type or brand? At 250 hrs I wouldn't expect any real changes.

Even on my last fluid and filter change (second time, I'm at ~400 hrs) the fluid and inside of the filter were so clean you would swear they were brand new. So I wouldn't expect there to be any issues with particles or contaminants. When I changed my fluids last time, I went to all synthetic fluids (engine, hydro and front diff). I did notice a slight increase in hydro noise with the synthetic hydro fluid. But I needed the temp range (my real world operating range is -40F to +100F ambient air temps) far more than a minor change in hydro noise.

My 3725H doesn't have a screen either. The semi-synthetic fluid I put I put in last time made the HST a little quieter. It might depend on the viscosity of the fluid.

I hope the OP used premium tractor fluid, not regular hydraulic fluid.

Thanks guys! I appreciate you writing in, I went ahead a followed every hydraulic path I could find, I can now for sure confirm that my 5520h does not have a screen, I got it new so I think that confirms what @Slowpoke Slim said. It looks like hsts don't have them.

I'm starting to think the whine may have been around since I switched from OEM. I have been experiencing a little surging in then pedal and sluggish response on the equipment, and I think in focused on the noise difference.

I after changing filters and fluid I check every hydraulic fitting I could find, I can definitely say it's a bit quieter now and definitely feels better.

I still have some strangeness with the backhoe, but I'll save that for another thread. I've got some research to do on that before I start asking questions.

Thanks again !

Nor Gear or HST have them. It uses a spin on filter that tackles all the filtration before the fluid enters the pumps. Having the strainer, would cause too much restriction. The diagrams are not always accurate.

It's also important to keep using the OEM filter. Specially that one. There are other filters that work there is a risk of whine and starving the pump for fluid on colder climates.

The TA000025525A filter fits on almost all Branson models other than the very small series. I use a Baldwin on mine and haven't had any issues but I'll keep recommending the OEM one exactly because what I said above.

The screen may be in the tank outlet. That's where I put mine when building the Kenbota. It just looks like a short fitting (nut) in front of the tank outlet hose barb. Some tanks have the screen built into the outlet. My hose that feeds the pump is 1". Make sure yours is not kinked or crushed by other hoses or tractor parts.

@ptsg so nothing Branson has a strainer? The new service manual does mention a part number and shows it on the diagram and mentions it on the manual for hydraulic service.

I can definitely say mine doesn't have one, but it's so frustrating that they would take 2 years to produce a new 2020+ service manual and then still include a bunch of nonsense that doesn't apply at all to our models.

Thanks for writing in and confirming no more suction screens, as well as for your other posts here, they have been very helpful!

Older Branson models had the screen, but we're talking before they even made the 15 and the newish 20 series. I'm kinda bad with the years but I believe the post 2014 models, never had a screen.

I even searched the part number for the screen that you showed in the service manual and doesn't even pop up any results. I would imagine it would at least show in some filter kits if the tractors indeed used the screen.

I still have some strangeness with the backhoe, but I'll save that for another thread.
My BH76 was difficult to use for me, a newbie to backhoes. The boom would jerk up and down so hard it shook the whole machine, and when curling the bucket with loose material in it, about 1/3 of the time it slams into the stop and ejects most of the material. I tried a Kubota excavator and that was so much easier to use. It's the poor valves. I added adjustable one way flow restrictors to the boom and the bucket curl. They help but even after ~20 hours on it, it's not great. But I can get work done.
