My tractor started whining like the throwout bearing was going bad then it just stopped pulling. The 3pt hitch would no longer raise either. Trans fluid appeared to be up to normal but no matter what gear I use it will not move when the clutch is let out. After it cools off for a while it will move for a short distance then stop again. The 3pt hitch will raise and lower a couple of times then it quits again also. The PTO continues to work this whole time. Any ideas?

It sounds like your hydraulic filter screen is plugged and squealing like a pig !
Clean it, change the fluid and that just might be the problem...:thumbsup:

Thanks Ernie. I'll get the fluid Monday and try that. By the way my owners manual does not specify what type and weight hydro fluid. Do you have any idea and what my capacity is. Book does not give a lot of info except to not use the lightweight fluid. JT

Thanks Winston. I know nothing about tractors. I couldn't figure out why it did not move when I let the clutch out even if the hydro stuff didn't work. In a car even if the tranny is low on fluid it would move when you let the clutch out. It would burn up but would move for a while until it overheated. This is a learning process for me. FYI - to help troubleshooting:
The PTO is a direct mechanical connection from the 'front' all-mechanical range-selector transmission. So if the pto is good, the clutch is good.
Tractor Ernie and Winston1, you were both right. I drained the fluid today and it was nasty. The filter screen was covered with gunk too. Cleaned it up and added 5 gallons of 303 tractor fluid. It was the only fluid I could find on Sunday and it listed a lot of name brand tractors that it was compatible with so hope it will do. Tractor pulls great again and 3pt lift works fine now. I appreciate your assistance because I sure do have a lot to learn. Thanks again fellas. JT
