2009 ltx1050 Bad PTO????

Was cutting lawn when motor started smoking from underneath. Wasnt oil. When I shut off motor I noticed pieces of melted black plastic with metal like filings in it underneath mower. I removed the deck and tested the pto by pulling the switch to on. The pto engaged and you could see the pully spinning. The motor didnt smoke but after I shut off motor a few more small pieces of plastic and metal was on the ground. I also manually tried to turn the pto and it was tight but turned it was also hot. Any suggestions?

Sounds like you may have a short in the coil on the PTO. Find a manual to see what the resistance for the coil is suppose to be and also check for the coil to ground. There should not be any conductivity between the coil and ground.

The coil if good should read about 4 ohms. Windings could be open which will heat up the switch and both will eventually fail. If you replace the switch, checkout the coil. Changing switches is only a temp fix.
