Kubota L3400 HST
Recently I went to "Build my Kubota" and found that the new L2800 / L3400 have slightly larger displacements 91.5 cubic inches and 111.4 cubic inches for 2008. Previously the displacements were noted as 85 and 100.5. I picked up the 2008 Full Line Brochure today and it shows the greater displacement and slightly more horsepower. I was not able to talk to anyone at the Kubota dealership.

I am considering the L3400 and was wondering if anyone knows why the slight modification with the engines. It is my understanding from looking at past brochures of these models that the engine has been the same over the years. I generally prefer not buying the first year of anything. I wonder when Kubota will be shipping these models to dealers.

I haven't a clue why they would beef up the motor on this size machine. Hydraulic flow maybe, but not engine displacement...plenty for a 3500lb w/fel tractor.

Don't know for sure, but would bet that it's due to the Ultra Low Sulfer Diesel fuel and the emission restrictions that have been mandated. With the govt. in our fuel tanks, the engines don't make quite the power that they did and the manufacturers have had to futz with their engine specs/tuning to stay in a given power bracket.

Some have gone to turbochargers. Others have upped displacement. More cubic inches seems the simplest approach and may deliver a bonus in low end torque.

I wouldn't be afraid of a Kubota engine, new or not.

I saw a 3400 at the dealer last week in a crate and below the 3400 logo on the side was another decal that said something like "extra power". I don't remember exactly what it said, but I would guess it had the larger engine. I don't know what I would do with more power on mine.

I wouldn't be worried about a small tweak to displacement. Overall this tractor is a pretty old design.

I wouldn't argue with extra power. I wonder if the cost will increase. A little extra PTO umph is always nice.

The price hikes are already here so any price you get unless someone has an old unit will be a 2008.

There are times a tweak on the injection pump is done and there are times that they use a larger engine. I haven't been able to figure it out as to when either is used but many engines are used in a variety of models and horsepower and sizes depending on the intended uses.

I just bought a new L3400 yesterday (live in Indiana) and have been playing with it ever since. It still has the smaller engine, but seems to have more than enough power. So far I am really pleased. If you are going to buy one of these, do some competitive shopping. I got quotes ranging from $16700 to $15400, which included a loader, folding ROPS, and R-4 tires. Kubota is offering 0%-42 month financing, which makes the payment on a new tractor about the same as you would pay on an equivalent low hour used tractor that does not offer the 0% financing.
