Hello hello! We are going from 6.5 acres of land to 45 soon, and you all know what that means! New tractor!

I have a great Kubota dealer nearby and would like to continue to do business with them. However, a new large frame M series tractor is out of my budget. I have been looking at used M series tractor and found a nice one I am interested in.

2008 M5040 FWA hydraulic shuttle with LA1153 loader, R1 ag tires, 475 hours

I have read several older threads commenting on the M5040 but would like more opinions now that this model has been out for several years.

Does anyone know of any common problems that I should look out for?

My initial uses will be mowing grass, light dirt work with box blade, and using the front end loader to help with building a 30x40x12 shop. I would like to eventually run a 3 point disc mower, wheel rakes, and pull a small square baler; the idea being to put up my own hay, which is about 25 acres worth. I will most likely let the neighbor round bale all of it but I wouldn't want to miss out on cutting and raking.

I am not set on this model only, I am open to opinions, but would like to stay orange because of the dealer and because I own other Kubota equipment.

PS- I plan on keeping my BX25D with backhoe for a few years and then most likely selling it once I get the place like I want it. I will just have to see how much it gets used at that point, even though it is hard to imagine not having a BX since I have had one for the last 10 years!

I had a 2008 M5040 for 10 years. I put 450 hrs on it. Not one issue, not one time to dealer. Make sure the hydraulic fluid and filter have been changed. You will be happy with it. 20180725_103344.jpeg

Should be good, and will run the hay equipment you want as long as the disk mower isn't too big.

I've had a M5040 I bought I think in 2008. I have not had any problems with the machine at all. I would seriously consider the tractor if I were you. I have a newer L series also with the DPF and it has not been a big deal but I'd rather have all my equipment without that on it. The other nice thing about the M5040 is it has the same loader capacity as the M6040 and M7040 so the only thing you gain with those tractors is more PTO hp.

a good move to jump to the M series model. Low hrs is a plus, is it a single owner? any maintenance record? having owned L, MX series, the move to M series was one of my better decisions i've made (& i've made plenty worse)
best wishes on the possible transaction. that series is sought after being pre Tier 4
the machine is head & shoulders above "lesser" models mentioned above
btw after loading rear tires, my 1st purchase would be a hyd top link. bb

Thanks for all of the replies!!!

bb, I agree 100% that a hyd top link is the #1 priority purchase.

I went ahead and got the M5040 tractor today. I went to look at it and discovered the seller was a car guy and I offered my 2010 Camaro SS as a trade, and he accepted. My garage looks a little empty but my future shop will have a nice big Kubota in it!!

Tractor is bulletproof. Only advice I could give is to use Kubota SUDT2 when you change trans fluid. My Hyd shuttle does much better with it, especially during warm up.
