Hello,
I just gave a offer on a 2006 JM 354 tractor with 3 attachments. The old boy that owns the machine has some memory problems and can't remember what make the thing work (how to engage the PTO, make the 3 point hitch lower, etc.).
The box scraper is all the way up and wont lower. He has no idea and doesn't have the owners manual.
Do any of you folks know what lever besides the draft that might have to be actuated?
There is a foot peddle back and below the draft handle he knows nothing about. I too have no idea. I offered 6k for everything. Other than some leaks it is in good shape.
Thanking you for any help on one of these strange tractors

There are two styles of lift boxes for the 354, one with two levers -- draft and position -- and the other with a combo draft/position lever. For either one pushing the position lever down lowers the lift, whether the tractor is running or not. If you have two levers and don't know which one is position, pushing them both down won't hurt anything.

Some people have reported issues with the hydraulic lift cylinder getting stuck in the raised position. There is a knob under the seat that controls the rate of speed that the fluid goes into and out of the lift cylinder. If you turn the knob all the way off with the cylinder under pressure, the fluid pressure keeps your from being able to turn it back on again, and you're stuck. You need to figure out a way to support the implement to take the pressure off the cylinder so you can release the fluid. Something like parking one end on a stump or a big rock and lifting the other end with a tractor jack. That knob is held on with a set screw, I seem to remember people snapping the set screw off trying to force the knob. None of this has happened to me, I've just read about it here, so I'm a little fuzzy on the details. If you search the archives you should find people talking about it.

The PTO has two controls (in addition to the clutch). Under your right heel there is a lever that turns the PTO on and off, it's about the thickness of a ballpoint pen and half as long. Up is on and down is off. Next to your left hip is a lever that selects the PTO speed, forward is 540, backwards is 1000 and center is off. Push the clutch to the floor before operating either, and release the clutch to operate the PTO. If you can't move the lever without a horrible grinding you probably need to adjust your clutch. With the engine off you should be able to activate both levers without the clutch. If that works, check back here for help adjusting your clutch.

Thank you QSF. I did see that knob yet knew nothing about its use and for that matter the 'ol boy knew nothing ether. He says he bought the tractor new but i think his memory has left the shop. He told me it was a 2004 and then a 1996 and turned out to be a 2006.
i will check back tomorrow and see if he takes my offer. It seems to have a fule leak at the injection pump where the supply hose meets. It is super wet with HF at the loader single handle valve and the right ram that works the bucket. Tach and hours meter don't work, but the rest of the tractor seem fine.
It was always stored indoors. Paint still is chrisp and the seat good along with the tires.

Keep the water cool.

The hydraulic leaks should be easy to fix, just take the fitting apart and replace the seal, seals should be readily available.

The fuel leak may or may not be a big deal. If it's just a seal, it's just a seal. On the other hand, the fuel injection pump is filled with oil, that oil is supposed to be changed every 100 hours. If the oil isn't changed the pump can get damaged and leak fuel. Eventually the engine will stop running as the pump can no longer maintain pressure. I think the only remedy is to replace the fuel pump. A new pump is about $600.

There is a dipstick on the side of the fuel pump. Your first clue is going to be the quantity and condition of the oil.

Thanks again for your reply's. The oil in the fuel pump was full and clean along with the engine, for a diesel. Have made an attempt to call the ol boy, but no answer so far today. May have to dicker with the sticker a little. The single handle FEL control has to go, Junk.

Bought the tractor for 7k along with three attachments, King Kutter box scraper with rakers, King Kutter 5' brush hog, and a two bottom plow.
I fixed the FEL leaks by just tightening the angle fittings, fixed the fuel leak, but the joystix still leaks and will go to a spool.
Other than that is runs fine. I will change all the oils in the tractor.
Thanks to all that helped me out with the tractor.
