Going down the road the other day started to hear a whine coming from the rear of my 2006 f-150 (3.73) gears low and behold the rear pinion gear is shot at 110,000 miles. Is this normal mileage for it to take a crap?I am meticulous at doing maintenance changed the front & rear differential fluid every 30,000 miles.I do not very tow heavy or hot rod my truck(old fart).

Did you have a pinion seal leak or change the seal at some point?

It's a rare failure that's for sure. I bet somehow the preload on the pinion bearing because loose and caused too much play in the pinion.

Don't take this the wrong way but I don't know anyone that changes differential fluid every 30k miles. Are you sure about that?

I have been around Fords my entire life and have yet to see a pinion gear failure. For that matter in any brand.

Just bad luck I guess...

My guess would be that the bearing failed, either pinion or differential that threw the clearances off. The incorrect clearance then caused the gears to eat themselves. Regardless, the shrapnel from the failed gears would necessitate the replacement of the bearings. It might be overkill, but I'd replace the bearings at the axle ends too, just because they're suspect too.
