I just purchased a used 2002 TC45 with 230 hrs and have put 10 hrs on it since. And was wondering if this is normal, when starting the engine it surges at idle about 300 rpms from 700-1000 rpm. Is this normal? It lasts about 1-3 minutes depending on the ambient temp (30-60 deg F) before stabilizing around 800-900 rpm. I have changed the oil and filters and am just being cautious. thanks in advance

Steve, welcome to TBN!

My TC45D sometimes surges a bit as you indicated. I can normally stop it by just tapping the fuel lever up a bit. It seems to stabilize above 1000 rpm. I believe the surging is due to the governor overcorrecting when the engine and oil is cold. You might also adust up your idle so that it idles at 1000 rpm when warm instead of 800-900 rpm. I think just a few more rpm will really reduce the time it takes for the surging to smooth out.

As Jim I notes, adjust your idle up. Mine exhibits the exact same "hunting" when cold, and when I had the idle adjusted lower, like around 800, it was extremely bad, swinging several hundred rpm. Since then I have it set at around 1000 and it only does it a little bit now until it warms.

same thing here.....worse when cold...

i've gotten in the habbit of just bumping up the throttle handle a little before starting....like was said, about 1000rpm seems to really do it good...

Thanks to all that responded, I will adjust idle up to 900-1000, also noticed as you guys stated, that by bumping up throttle to idle at 1000 surge goes away.

Thanks again Steve

Both my 2002 TC-40 and Ford F-250 diesel truck surge slightly when first started however upon reaching what I beleive is a certain engine warmpth level, it goes away on it's own.

I have a black indelible magic-marker line drawn on mine that marks the idle for 1000. I move it to the line when cold to start, but bottom it out all the way to "normal" idle when it is hot. Get the best of both worlds - easier smoother starting and lower idle when hot.
