Left Tractor out in rain the other day. Started and ran briefly but then sputtered and died out. White smoke from the exhaust. Water in tank I presume. I changed out one fuel filter (the easy one) and drained tank and put in new gas. Ever since the tractor will turnover and keep running if I hold the key but dies if I let go of key. There is now black smoke coming from exhaust when I try to start the tractor. I cleaned the fuel filter but have not been to buy a new one yet. I checked the fuses and had the battery checked and all is good. What is the likely cause? Fuel Shut off Solenoid? Starter? I do hear clicking when I turn the key to the pre-heat condition. Any input is appreciated.

Is the starter keeping it running or does it seem to fire normally while the key is held? ie -- if you started at 1/2 throttle would it rev up until you let go of the key?

Are you sure the fuses are OK, did you pull them and check? I had the same problem turned out to be a bad fuse. Replace then and see what happens.
You may have water in the light switch, which is a common problem with the BX2000. Check the switches for water, replace and check the fuses again. The fuses I am revering to are on the right side by the battery.

why change the easy filter? the first filter under the tractor is always the first culprit. second, I dont think you have water in diesel as long you had cap on or you know something we dont yet about water got into the tank. I would not try to keep it running the motor by using the starter- thats a good way to get premature failure. I would check the fuses and safety switches (pto,seat,hst centered) first. cleaning the diesel filter? how did you manage that? you cant exactly get contaminants out of a sealed filter without damaging something. its cheap so replace both. while you are at replacing the filters - do you have free flow of fuel? did you put some of fuel in a glass jar and let it sit and observe for water?

This is a key point showing that your fuel and its delivery are fine in the start position. Fuel is being stopped when you let go of the key. Its an electrical issue allowing a valve to close. Maybe the ignition switch. Try running a hair drier on it for a few hrs [on lo] to get any water out. ... Also try wiggling the key as you allow it back to the RUN position. If theres an internal contact of the switch acting up you may find a sweet spot where some orientation of side pressure will keep it running. Thatll tell you a new switch would fix it.

That doesnt prove the key switch is good. It seems the start position operates the solenoid and the run position doesnt. We need a wiring diagram to see if the run position should operate the solenoid directly, or if theres a relay that the run position should energize to keep the solenoid powered.
Since the solenoid valve operates in the start position the solenoid itself is OK. Its just not being held ON by RUN. ... For trial, a hot lead from +12 to the solenoid should keep it running.
