There is a new belief system that has quietly replaced the now outdated and traditional morals of my older generation. As you say, it seems to have something to do with "everything is fair if it is justifiable". Math does seem to be popular as a justifier. Even though I don't completely understand the rationale, I think it will somehow work out for the good. For one thing, it is certainly going to force buyers to become better educated.
The first time I noticed that type of advertising was about 10 years ago at one of the chain tool stores. They were advertising a 5 hp air compressor that plugs into a 110 volt circuit. It is true as far as it goes. The problem is that they are measuring hp via current at full stall. Therefore, most of the hp calculation is based on heat, and hardly any on torque. The motor can only put out that many hp for a few seconds....actually only for the time it takes for the breaker to throw. But because of the math, they are justified in saying that it will put out that many hp.....just as long as they don't say for how long!
