First of all, it is a great tractor for my purposes. However, from day one, the 91.3 cu. in. direct injection engine surges at any indication of lugging; is this a normal characteristic of direct injection? It becomes annoying and forces me to "ride" the clutch with fine maneuvering. I talked to the dealership about the issue, and they said, "it is normal??" Can I make any adjustments to improve this problem? Thanx in advance for any info. Also, I have other indirect injection diesel tractors, a (NH 1720, Ford 1500, and a 28 yr. L295 DT I purchased new in 78', that has never had this issue? They all operate near sea level. Also, they are all gear models.

It definitely should not surge like that.
Is it new or under warranty yet?
If so, it's time to make an issue of with with your dealer.

I purchased the tractor new from a dealership for my boys in 2000, when JD was competing for market share on small tractors. I was away when the tractor was delivered. We ordered the 790 with a 60" bucket with the Model 70 loader, and it was delivered with a 54"!? The problems started there and went down hill. The tractor was relocated to my sons property in Oregon, and the hassle to correct it was too great. The tractor was assembled well, and they filled the tires at no charge, and was told the surging issue would go away with time, wrong! It now has a total of 42 hours after six years, and has been garaged for the entire time, and well maintained. The fuel system is clean, and no water in the sediment bulb. They never complained, and I thought the surging went away, until I used it recently. It is out of warranty of course, and it's my fault for not having it corrected. Thanks for your reply.
