20 year old snapper rear engine when put it in reverse since new disc makes grinding

I have replaced the rubber drive disc goes forward fine but when you put it in reverse something sounds like its grinding. the brake disc that goes on back
of disc is gone. would that make it make grinding sound like metal disc is scrubbing??? in reverse original did not have brake disc on it??
