2 Teenage girls just got in bad ATV accident ..being airlifted

My wife just came into my office and had been out walking our dog when our daughter in law stopped her to tell her that someone had just come to their door asking if she knew who the parents of 2 teenage girls on a cammo ATV were or where they lived...They thought one might be our grand daughter who has a cammo ATV and thank God it was not ..she was home...so now my wife and daughter in law are out going down our street to find out who the girls belong to ..the ambulance is there and they are hurt real bad..the LEO told them that one girl was turning blue..they called for life flight...

We are in the country on a lightly traveled paved road - I have preached and preached to our grand daughter about going out on the road and if she does to really be careful..this is really upsetting to us all...and thank God it was not our grand daughter ...I sure pray those girls make it and I feel so sorry for their parents...gee lately there are accidents around us here..first the friend in the Pto and now this...Be careful out there

We found the girls parents...they were from the next country over...so they had to have driven the ATV at least 4 miles to get over in our area...What a shock to them and one girl is not expected to make it ..she was life flighted. very sad indeed.

As an avid dirt dike racer/ rider and ATV owner, I sure hate to hear these reports. I pray the girl makes it. My 8 and 9 yr olds ride alot and I know I worry about them even when I am riding with them.

Sure hope they were wearing, at a minimum, a helmet. But I have a feeling that was not the case.

No helmets...they hit a tree on a narrow paved country road...no telling how fast ..but fast...I worry about my grand daughter like I know you worry about your kids...all we can do is warn them , train them , pray for them but we can't lock them up...

You are right. But we can lock that ATV up in a heart beat if they don't wear their safety gear.
I am willing to bet if these girls would have had a helmet on, they would be going home tonight with just bumps, scrapes and a few bruises. I sure wish that was the case.....

Me too ! and I bet you are right...I agree with the lock 'em up part too...I really feel for the parents...I don't know them but it is hard to imagine..hits too close to home for us...

Try paddling the upper yough without a helmet. Doing a lot of whitewater, a helmet is mandatory.

You're absolutely right about locking up the ATV's. Sad to say, starts with the parents. The other day, a little boy, probably no more than about 8 was driving an ATV on his parents property next to the road. He was good, riding the machine on two wheels for a short time. No helmet. I figure it's only a matter of time.

If they don't have good sense, a helmet won't help. Sometimes safety gear adds to the sense of invincibility and encourages more reckless behavior and that is NOT a solution.

Going fast enough to lose control and hit a tree? Speed (and probably an overloaded ATV) is the real problem. Safety gear is only a distant second.

Yes, this seems to happen with ATV's way too much. I think their apparent stability makes people feel they can ride them fast... right up until they can't keep them on the road.

Like scesnick we ride/race dirtbikes and have all the safety gear and hours and hours of riding experience and I still worry about my son and riding. Put an untrained kid on a big ATV with no safety gear and no supervision? Not going to happen while I am around.
