Guys I'm getting ready to buy my 1st tractor - And it will be a 4 WD Yanmar with a Loader - I'll use it to for 11 acres of planting Horse pasture - Putting in fence posts - Mowing, pulling a manure spreader etc.

I know I'll get a tractor somewhere between 19 to 26 hp, but my question is what are your thoughts on the # of cylindars - At some of these web sites you look at the price is not much different between a 2 cyl and 3 cyl - And sometimes the hp is more on the 2 cyl

Below is an example from LMTCs web site - I realize one is 4WD and one is not - But the 2 Cyl has more hp than the 3 cyl - Any thoughts, thanks!

I am by no means an expert at this, but I can tell you what I have read here on the forum:

a 2cyl has a little bit more torque. They idle rougher than a 3cyl does and they are a bit noisier.

a 3cyl has a little bit less torque. They idle smoother than a 2cyl does and they are a bit quieter.

The YM2210 engine has a 90mm bore and the YMG2000 has the 80mm bore.

Even though the 2T90 two cylinder is smaller in size and length... it produces more HP from the larger cylinders.

Thanks for the replies guys - Is there any cost efficiency with a 2 Cyl over a 3 Cyl - Is one of them better on fuel? Does one of them cost any less to maintain?

Thanks,
Rod

I am in the process of rebuilding a 2 cylinder YM1700 and I bet the costs for the parts would have been about 1/3 more for a 3 cylinder. Not that you would ever have to do that.

A 2 cylinder of the same displacement as a given 3 cylinder will produce more torque, which is what makes a tractor effective. It will produce LOTS more torque at low RPMs, making it more fuel efficient, but it will have more vibration. HP is not a product of number of cylinders so much as displacement. A 2210 will out work a YMG2000....but it is older, has more vibration, and everyone has their own preference.

My bottom line advice is what it always is -- choose the dealer...someone you trust, someone you think you can go back to (or at least call) for support, INSIST on references before making that choice.....then use the dealer's knowledge and experience in making a model choice. A responsible dealer is not going to want to sell you more or less than you need.

Do not forget that that 2 cyl sound is something unique and for some reminds then of the old 2 cyl JD's affectionally known as "Johny Poppers."

Ummmm..........both of those are 4wd

Great advise, but this seems easier said than done. I'm in the market for a small 4x4 tractor w/ some attachments, I would love to find a knowledgable dealer to trust. I've been looking, researching and talking to folks. One "dealer" I've been working with seems to be one of the larger in the Pacific NW, and w/o naming names I can tell you that I won't be buying from him. I'm located in Alaska, need to have tractor barged or trucked freighted, and would like to buy a Yanmar on the West Coast somewhere to reduce shipping cost, any other options/recomendations?

Welcome to TBN, Luke. I grew up in AK and until I went to College was never West of California.:D My whole family still lives in the Valley.

Buck at EFC works out of Washington state and sends tractors to AK. There is no better dealer than he!! He as well as other dealers post on this forum and contribute valuable information, guidance, and advice for FREE!! We consider their presence and contributions of great value. Buck will NOT lead you astray--you can trust him.

2 cyl. or 3 cyl. be sure to get the power shift mod.I have a 3110 which is a 3 cyl. & she runs smooth. I can't speak for the 2 cyl. as I haven't owned one

Mike, I have talked with Luke in the past. Unfortunately I don’t offer what he is looking for so I had to refer him to other dealers. I am positive they will be able to help him.

Buck

P.S. 2 cylinders reign supreme, highest torque per hp, low fuel consumption; they do have more noise and feel like they have more vibration. Actually they are more in balance than a 3 cylinder and the parts are built heavier so they tend to have a longer lifespan. I had a 50hp 2 cylinder for a long time and it was awesome.

I have a 3 cyl Yanmar and it seems to be very fuel efficient, I have no complaints. I'd agree with Kenmac, I love the powershift feature on my model.

EFC....Buck,

You must be thinkin of someone else. I just looked at your website and I'm sure we've never spoke, swapped emails, spit.. or anything else. I'll be calling you tommarow as I really am in the market for a tractor..thanks!

Sorry about that I had talked to a Luke from Alaska just a week earlier. I shouldn’t have assumed it was you.

I have owned both. A 1700 and now a 2020. There is no contest for me, the 3 cylinder wins hands down. It it much smoother and I really can't tell any difference in the fuel consumption and I've not ask it to do anything that it doesn't have the power to do. I recently bush hogged 7 acres with my 5' cutter in brush I would have to ride down with my front loader. When I loaded it up and went to fill up it took 2.8 gallons of diesel to refill it.

By the way the Power shift is awesome, and I really love the 20 series with the shifter on the dash.
