2.9 motor HP

Just wondering I see that JD uses the 2.9 motor for tractors with anything from 45HP to 75hp. Question is how do they very the HP that much.
Do they use more than one size turbo or better flowing heads or are the fuel injectors differant. Also with more HP comes more torque so are the clutch and drive train sized differant or are the smaller HP tractor over built?

Tony, Not sure which model series you are referring to. Typically, fuel settings in the pumps are different as well as different injectors and turbos are all used to get the different hp ratings. Typically you will find many areas of the drivetrains are the same over the same series. There are some changes to gear ratios in some cases to accomodate different tire sizes and sometimes certain gears are heavier in transmissions and final drives to withstand the extra power. Dry clutches are usually the same within a series. In areas with wet clutches, sometimes the pressures to engage those clutches are higher to apply more clamping forces. Overall, the smaller horsepower models are "overbuilt", although deere tends to "over spec" many things when compared to many of their competitors.

My guess is that you are looking at the 5045D and E, the 5055D and E, the 5065E and 5075E correct??

I would say that the 5045 is likely just overbuilt. When looking at all four of the 50x5e series between 45 and 75 hp, the shipping weight of the 4wd tractor on ALL of them is 5070lbs. Usually, if something changed in the trans or rear end to make it beefier, that would be reflected in the weight.

I would also say that the 5045 has a SERIOUSLY de-tuned engine. Big 179cu-in engine WITH A TURBO and only 45hp.......Uh, yeah, they got it turned down.

HEck, go back a few decades and look at a john deere 2040. (I only mention this one cause we used to have one). It has a 179ci engine, and ironically, same bore and stroke as well. It was rated as a 40hp tractor at the PTO. The 5045E is only rated @ 37 PTO. AND THE 2040 has NO TURBO:confused2:

The basic engine is the same from back then. I think it even dates back farther than that, although it may have been a smaller displacement. Deere has also used that same 2.9L/179ci engine in all sorts of industrial applications and other equipment for decades.

As for the 5045d/e, yes, they are WAY detuned. I think they are doing it with less fuel, less boost and they also ****** the timing. My father has a 5045e and it has extremely sluggish throttle response and is hard to start when cold. The only reason the turbo is on the 5045/5055 is for emission reasons. I have a 5203 non-turbo (44 PTO hp) and it starts extremely well, even in the cold, and has much better throttle response.

LD1 yes thats what I was talking about. In my case its the 5303 2WD vs 5045E 4WD. The 5045 is at the bottom of the HP range I'm looking for but still bigger than what I have right now. {55 super] Not that I would need to but could the 5045 be dialed in differantly to get a little more HP without to much trouble? Well the 5045E is gone they had it listed in at least two sites, was updated end of Nov. 2012. Called the dealer to ask about it and he said no such tractor at there place. Seemed like a nice guy but from what he said that one has been gone for at least 2 years. Oh well glad I called before going on wild goose chase.
