1999 Farm pro 2420 2wd

Hi i own a 1999 Farm Pro 2420 2wd front end loader tractor. I recently have had a problem with starting it. When I turn the key to start it i get a grinding/clicking noise. I charged the battery and had the starter and altenator checked and all looked good. I beleive it has something to do with the flywheel when i pulled off the starter i noticed the teeth of the fly wheel were grinded down to almost nothing. I am now stuck wondering what do i do next? Do I disasemble the whole motor and replace the flywheel or is the problem somewhere else? Thanks for any help. -Clinton

I'd sorta expect the starter pinion gear to be chewed up before the ring gear teeth. What does the pinion look like? Regardless, you wouldn't have to replace the whole flywheel - just the ring gear that encircles the flywheel. But that may be a bit premature.

Given that yours is a 12 year old tractor, I'd replace both battery cables with new. Just toss the old ones, they have a tendency to oxidize under the connector lugs.

Also follow the negative battery cable to where it's bolted to the tractor frame. Unbolt it. Use a grinder to take off the paint, right down to bare metal. Install your new cables, and cover that clean spot at the end of the negative battery cable with silicone dielectric (hardening formula, not the stuff that stays sticky).

That alone might be enough to fix your problem. If not, c'mon back and we'll talk about adding a starter relay.

Well, with the teeth ground off the answer is yes. Your ring gear is trashed it sounds like. This was due to the starter not being installed correctly or possibly loose. Either way it ate up the teeth.

I agree with a loose starter or possibly the wrong starter,the tractor will need to be split to replace the ring gear on the flywheel . If we can help you with any parts let me know
