I'm looking at a 13 yr old JD 870 with very low hours. It has been sitting since July. Owner claims base tractor no loader was $40,000 new with the 36HP Diesel. Really?? Standard was 28HP. ?? - Curtis Cab with Plexigass windows was above that. How low a price would I need to make this a good deal when you consider a new 3520 lists under $30,000, has Loader, HST, warranty, factory cab, new technology and hasn't sat at all?

Welcome to TBN odrg.

Afraid you are being fed a line about the 870. A new 870 in 1998 with 2WD listed for $14,952, and a 4WD was $17,320. The engine, as you found, is actually 28 HP. That was the only engine available on it. The 30 hours are also suspicious. 1998 was also the last year for that model. The serial number would be 17xxxx.

There is another one out of 8 listed on Tractorhouse with 35HP so maybe it is an option. I will be seeing the original bill of sale this week so that will verify what he paid. Thanks.

Don't believe everything you see on those online listings. Lots of errors in those. You always need to do your own research.

The JD service manuals and advertising only show one engine for the 870.

I would stay as far away from that seller as possible. My new 1070 (36hp) with 80 loader, ag tires, loaded rear tires, and MMM with mid pto kit was only $15k in mid 1980's. My hr meter was only .3

Agree stay away from that seller. Did you really mean mid 1980's? First year for the 1070 was 1990. Before that it was the 1050.

Yes, you guys are right. No 36HP listed anywhere in JD literature. Asking $19000. Low hours now but after i put a couple hundred hours on it, it would just be another 13 year old tractor worth not a lot. Thanks again!!Now looking at a JD3520 or a Kioti 35.

Keep looking! That seller is either delusional or stupid-possibly both!

I'd still be interested in seeing that receipt where he says he paid $40,000 for it!
