Hello, I have a 1995 Ford Explorer. I will always keep it as it has 200,000 miles on it and has been absolutely bulletproof. And it's still in very good shape. Anyway had it's first issue. In order: the abs light came on, the cruise quit, the interior lights would stay on a very long time after opening a door, then the all wheel drive quit, along with the hot/cold control on the heater. Lastly the abs switch on the master cylinder caught fire (this was a recall on my year explorer recently, but Ford wouldn't do anything for me as my serial number was not included in the recall)
Dealer replaced everything that burnt around the master cylinder and then the cruise, all wheel drive and heater started working again. been good all winter. But they couldn't get the abs light off. They said all these problems are because of the Gem module? (not the brakes of course, but funny the other stuff started working again). Anyway a new Gem is over $500.00 here in Soviet Canukistan and they said they are getting hard to get, so they told me to locate one from the wreckers for cheap and they could test it. I found two out of the same year Explorer except they were both four doors (mines a two door Sport). The part numbers are different. The dealer said they will not work, they have to be exact. Is this true? They are all 95's.
Mine is #FT7Z14B205EA. The ones I found are #F57B-14B205-CH.

Thanks.

Ford is typically good at keeping the same part number if shared between models. These are two different numbers, so I'd say they will not replace each other.

The FT7Z number above probably reads as F77Z, and if you have a GEM marked F77Z-14B205-EA, it might have been replaced during the warranty period since this stamping number is 2 model years newer than your vehicle. Look through some 97 models and you will probably find F77Z- prefixes.

1st F=decade 90's, 2nd 7= model year released 1997, 3rd 7= series (Ranger, Explorer), 4th Z,S,E=sales or engineering code.

Someone who sells Ford parts could tell you much more

Might check again as a Ford truck base GEM can be replaced with an uprated module but the additional feature set will not work as the wiring to the module does not exist: ie; 4 door can plug & play in a 2 door. The speedo drive if not programmed would be off 5% max. (low) Newer GEM's would default 10x (100mph) so would only go about 10 mph physically before rev limiter would cut fuel without programming

The factory did this all the time when the production pick rate did not match sales orders causing a shortage & the uprated module is plug & play compatible, just would cost the manufacturer a slight cost increase to continue shipping trucks.

The electric Ranger truck must use the base module as it derives speedo drive from it due to missing PCM. The only exception I remember.
