The solenoid clicking says that your safety switch is closed allowing power to your solenoid primary winding. Since you hear the click the next question is whether or not it is closing the high current circuit so power will go to your starter.
We used to use a pair of common pliers with the handles placed across the input and output ⅜" copper terminals of the solenoid. Yes it will spark, but if you do that and the starter pops or makes any kind of motion that it wants to move, your hight current contacts in your solenoid are burned out. Time for a new one and be careful that you get one that will work with your safety switch.....that's one that there are 2 small studs on it, isolated from everything else in the solenoid whereby one goes to your safety switch to pickup ground and the other goes up to your key switch for power.
