I have a 1988 case 885xl mfwd with the lighted switch underneath the steering column to engage the 4 wheel drive. While using the tractor I experience a "clunk clunk" sound and the 4 wheel drive quit working. Light still works at switch. We listened for the solenoid down at the transfer case to make a noise. It appears to be working fine but the noise is definitely not loud, just a slight click when turned on. Anybody have any time saving check this or that first advice? Or what is the most common component to break on these tractors?

Hopes this helps somebody. We figured out the problem. The Case 885xl has a solid shaft running from the rear transfer case to the front "hogs head." The shaft is splined on both ends. There are splined shafts coming out of the transfer case and the front differential. They are joined together not by U-joints but couplers that are splined as well. The front coupler was stripped on the side that attaches to the front differential. The part can be found for somewhere around 100 bucks online.
