1987 Ford 555 start procedure

Hi all. When I try to get a non running 555B to turn over next week and don’t want to be crushed if I hook a battery directly to the starter and then trip the selonoid with a jumper. What is the neutral position on this piece of equipment?…I read shifter to the left of the steering wheel moved to the middle position. Is this correct?

Column shift in the middle position between F and R. The floor shifter in neutral.

What Tractortech said. Easy to tell when especially a floor mount shifter is in neutral normally. Gear shift is easy to move side to side between the gates. It should have several inches of movement where if it is in a gear it will be pretty limited.
