1987 Ford 1920
Hi there -- I was directed to this forum as a place to help me price my tractor. It is a Ford 1920, bought new in 1987, with 4wd, a front end loader, a mower attachment, and 218 hours on it. It is mostly garage kept and my dad used it for mowing and light snow removal. The tires are R3's. There are no mechanical issues. New battery in 2014. It was never repaired or damaged. What is a good price for a private sale?

Pricing will vary by location and the urgency of the sale timeframe. But apart from the less than universally desirable R-3 tires & wheels, you have one of the most durable and highly regarded compact tractors ever built of any brand or color. Do not let it go cheaply!

Tractor blue book says $12k.i would Guess more in the $8k range. Not sure how accurate that is. Hard to believe it's a 87 with only 218 hours. Good luck if selling, but I'd keep it.
I'm sure others here with more experience & familiar with a 1920 could give you better answers.

Thanks Rick and Gary. I wish I could keep it. There are some golden memories associated with it, and of course, my dad. He passed away in 2012.

I'd ask full blue book price and hold firm. Where else are you going to get that tractor with those hours and in that condition? You're not. Start at 12 and hold firm, laugh at anyone that offers you anything less.

I like how you think. I will also take that advice -- be firm and laugh!

I bought a 1924 last winter for 8 grand with 475 hours but mine is HST , grade box and york rake , Just 1.5 hour south of you in Pasadena Md. With the recent snow storm you could get between 9 and 10 thousand if they call for another storm .

I did have it up on Craigslist for $9500, but had two people tell me to raise the price, both saying that it was worth "a good deal more". Thanks for your comment.

Condition is EVERYTHING in the tractor world. You can have a low hour tractor in below average to poor condition and have a tough time selling it. You have the benefit of a popular tractor, in great shape for the age, and very rare hours that can easily be verified. You hold all the cards, my friend. All you have to say is "where you gonna find another one like this? You aren't". If the finish mower is part of the package then most definitely $12,000 all day long. Even without the finish mower you'd still be looking at top top dollar. Don't be in too big a hurry to sell it, the right person will know what you have and beat a path to your door to take it off your hands before missing out.

I bought a low time 1988 4x4 Ford 1920 FEL in Ottsville, PA just over a year ago (about 140 miles from you?)
It had 1056 hours, but had some repair issues.
I replaced both (Calcium Chloride rotted) rims, tires, and tubes, I replaced the seat, I had the loader bucket rebuilt, replaced the battery, the 3pt. hitch linkage needed new parts. I replaced all fluids & filters, coolant hoses, and did a host of other work, including removing, sanding, priming, and repainting all the sheet metal on both underside and outside.
I even put in a new clutch, just because at 75 years old now, I knew I could not do that later at 85 years old.
I paid $9500 for that tractor, even though I thought it was really worth $8500.
My issue was: Where the **** am I going to find another one of these 1920s in this condition.
Well: You have a 1920 that from your description is in BETTER CONDITION!
Knowing what I know now, even though I am Florida for the winter, if I were still looking, I would fly up there tomorrow, and buy your tractor.
IT IS A VERY RARE GEM !!!
I love my 1920 4x4, and with new paint/decals, it really does look like new!

Your 1987 is probably a 3 cylinder Shibuara, while my 1988 is a 4 cyl. No big difference in my opinion.
The bottom line here is that if I could have bought your tractor a year ago, with 218 hours, I could have EASILY paid $12,000 for yours, and would have been money ahead.
Then too, you have a mower which is probably worth $700, since it likely also has a maximum of 700 or less hours.
I think you should either raise your price to $12,900, and maybe negotiate to $11,500, or should keep the price at $12,000, and under NO CIRCUMSTANCES go below $11,500.

Yet another thought would be to keep the tractor listed at $12,000 (don't go below $11,500). and sell the mower separately.
