I am new to this site and it has been very helpful in my tractor research.

I am considering buying my first tractor (maybe this week) and want to make sure the dealer's price is fair. The dealer is very well know in our area (Washington County, Texas).

The tractor is a 1981 JD 2040 hydro-stat with one owner and 2500 hrs. It has been very well kept with relatively new hoses and belts. Good (not excellent) rubber on the tires, both front and back and it starts with one quick pop of the key. They are firm at $6900.

I am also considering having them add a Bush Hog 2346qt FEL for $3900.

Any input on this pricing would be appreciated.

Thanks for a geat site!!!

To get an idea of a fair price, click here . Go to the bottom left corner of the page and click on used tractor price guide and walk yourself through it. Tractor prices vary by area, but it will give you an idea on the asking price.

Thanks for your help. The pricing looks right in line. I looks like I am going to own Green!

rmoraw,

Are you sure that 2040 is a hydrostat? I have a '78 2240, which is basically the same tractor as the 2040, just slightly bigger. Unless I'm mistaken, a hydrostatic trans was not offered on these machines. My 2240 owners manual does not mention a hydro trans option, so I would be very surprised if this was an option on the 2040.
Regardless of the transmission type, I believe you will be well satisfied with the 2040. I purchased my 2240 six years ago with 850 hours on the clock, I've got around 1200 hrs now, only needed a few fairly minor repairs.

The 2040 was never built with more than hydraulic power steering. It is far better tractor then the earlier 10-20-30 series and is quite reliable.

They are a very "In Demand" tractor--We recently sold a very exceptional JD 2040 with JD loader, 1200 hrs and all original front to back with original paint, hardley scratched, still in the front bucket for $13500--However--This was one of the high end used tractors that we only rarley see /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif I have had around 20 calls since we sold it, wanting to know if it was still available and let them know if something came up again comparable--Ken Sweet

My mistake on the hydro-stat. It is hydraulic power steering. I was thinking of one of the others I was considering.

The dealer is installing the FEL and it will be delivered next Friday. I found a brand new 6' NH 951b mower to complete the set. The dealer was going out of business and I got it for $450 (retails over $1000).

I am going to start looking for a manual for the 2040.

Thanks again for the posts.

I think that you can get a manual from the site that GatorBoy gave you!
