1973 Ford 4000 Hydraulic Control Valve

Have a Ford 4000 with one set of rear remotes that feed from under the seat to the back of tractor. The control handle seems to be frozen or stuck. Someone suggested hitting it hard to see if it would break free. Seems a little risky?? Is this a rebuildable part or if there is trouble is this simply a replacement unit?

Is it safe to assume this set up, when working properly, would be able to operate a hydraulic cylinder? Getting ready to use trailer spreader and would like to be able to use one that has a hydraulic engagement mechanism that pushes gear into spreader tire to make spreader work.

Planted this weekend. Managed to get hoses hooked to tractor, but only seem to be getting movement in one direction. Never actually got the cylinder to move either direction, but could hear noise like the pump actuating in one direction and nothing in the other. Swapped over to JD 5303 and worked like was supposed to. Powered both in and out.

Any feedback or hints for things to check or try? Could this be a one direction valve and it is trying to extend when fully extended? Tried swapping hoses to the other SCV, but still no movement.

Right now, the valve is in single acting mode. There is a screw in the valve, I believe it is the slotted hex screw on the front, the if you unscrew or screw it you will get a double acting mode. I will try to look tomorrow to see what you need to do.

I assume you are referring to the screw circled in yellow? We were discussing the history on this tractor and are not sure this has ever been used. If this works it would be a huge help.

Yes, that one. If it is screwed in all the way (which I can't tell from the picture) it is a double acting valve. If that screw is screwed out, it is a single acting valve.

I have to admit I am not too hydraulic savvy. I may not fully understand the difference between single and double acting. Initially moving the lever only one direction seemed to engage the hydraulics. Moving the opposite direction made no noticeable change.

I did find that screw and was able to back it out several turns with a crescent wrench as no socket seemed to fit it. Hooked hoses up and now lever will extend and retract hydraulic cylinder on spreader!

I also read in another thread on an old tractor forum where it too said to back out on that screw.

Appreciate the advice!

The interesting thing is that is opposite what I remember, but, it works. Single acting means that the cylinder is powered by hydraulic oil from one side. It would retract by gravity or a spring. Double acting is what you have, a cylinder powered by hydraulic oil from both sides.
