Hello,

I just purchased a 1972 John Deere 1520 w/2100 hours... really nice tractor!

My concern... there is a "whirring" sound coming from what I believe is the hydraulic pump (?), located behind the side panels in front.

The previous owner said that the sound is just the hydraulic pump, i.e. nothing out of the ordinary.

To me it sounds as if there is a worn bearing or something in there... is this normal?

Thank-you,

Brian

If it sounds like a bearing failing it probably is. Might want to disconnect the shaft and see if there is any movement.

Thank-you for the reply.

When I was looking at the tractor, I had noticed this "whirring/grinding" noise coming from the front of the tractor, i.e. hydraulic pump or area, and the seller, who was an older gentleman who runs a tractor repair shop, and who I am inclined to trust said that the sound was perfectly normal and it is just the pump.

Has any other John Deere 1020, 1520 owners heard this from their tractors, and is it normal?

Thank-you.

If the tractor really has 2100 hrs use it would surprise me if hyd pump has a problem. It wouldn't hurt to check hyd pump drive coupler.

Thank-you Jim,

It may be perfectly fine, but after having a Ford 8N with a noisy throwout transmission bearing, I am highly suspicious of odd sounds.

Again, the older gentleman said that the sound was perfectly normal... but?

Keep in mind that we haven't heard it, that limits how much we can weigh in on this.

Perfectly understand...

I appreciate and / all feedback, as although I have several JD garden tractors, have never owned a... JD tractor.

Being that it's a 1969 (I read the serial # wrong), with only 2,116 hours and a history of light use and... the hydraulics work great, I am likely okay... but, I need some sage advice.

Thank-you both who replied, as it is much appreciated!

Is there any difference between cold and warmed up ? Whirring I can deal with . Grinding would concern me . I would have a look at the splines on shaft and coupler . Good luck .

I totally agree. Attempting to diagnose tractor malfunctions by looking at a puter monitor isn't easy
