JD 2305
Good tractor to run a 5ft bush hog 3 to 4 x per year of about 3 acres? 39 HP gasser, live PTO, Pwr steering, 2000 lb rear 3pt lift, 3000 hrs, for $4500. Any opinions about this machine? thanks

We got one new in 1968 with a FEL to replace a JD 420 - pulled a three bottom plow, baler, and wagons no problem. When dad sold it in 1980 it brought $6K almost what he paid for it.

Good strong tractor that if decent condition is worth the $ IMO.

How does it look? Did it age gracefully? That's critical to me when buying old machinery. After something is 40 years old an experienced mechanic can tell at a glance if the care was good. Take a experienced tractor buddy along - maybe on the first visit but certainly on the second.
I don't know that particular model tractor, but I've had good luck with older JD gassers. Except for one model they were all nice tractors.
If it's a good one they run very smoothly was built to last. The criteria that I use on older tractors is simply to drive it around. See how it feels and runs. Make sure it steers easily, doesn't leak fluids at all, the clutch and shifter works smoothly, and it shouldn't smoke - certainly not when working. Those old iron tractors lasted and lasted. However it runs today is most likely exactly how it will run for the next decade or two. The hp and 3 pt are more than you need, but on a gasser like this with a heavy flywheel and good governor, having too much power simply means you can do your work at low RPM if you prefer.
Oh....on price. I'm of the opinion that on used equipment it is wise to be prepared to pay for a machine in good condition or better. Good condition means everything works, paint is sun faded, tires are half gone, seat has a usable rip or repair. And I insist that the tractor has been parked under some sort of cover or shelter - always. Conversely, facing one in average to poor condition I won't buy it at any price. With those things in mind, that price is about right for a nice 1020. And a little too high for an average one. Still...with JDs it's easier to get your money out if you decide to sell.
luck, rScotty

Check the transmission oil filter and screen. If somebody poured a non wet clutch compatible oil in there. The brake pads could have deteriorated.

I also recommend checking coolant with test strips. Cylinder liner cavatation(electrolysis) is a lot more prevalent than in past years.
