I noticed that the battery wasn't charging (no voltage increase when running), checked the generator (Lucas) output (probably incorrectly), seemed very low. took it to shop, the man said it's fine, must be regulator or wiring. I saw nothing bad on the wiring, so installed a voltage regulator. Polarized, and went to start, and the warning light is already on, until I turn on the ignition, at which point it goes off. I started smelling electrical overheating, the generator got hot, along with the "B" terminal/wire on the regulator., with the ignition switch off. So now, I am scratching my head. Suggestions appreciated.

I was just about to post an answer. It is not needed now, but maybe it can help someone else. Here it goes:
My theory:
I think your new regulator is faulty and you get battery (+) out at "D" as soon as you connect the battery (+) at "B". "D" is then shorted to ground through the wire at "D", and then through the generator's brushes and commutator to ground.
The warning light is on because "WL" (the tab where Warning Light is connected) is the same as "D", and the light will find ground through other parts, probably the voltage stabilizer in the instrument cluster. When you turn on the key switch, the warning light will connect to (+) on both of it's terminals. One always has connection to "WL", the other terminal now gets connection to "B" through the key switch. The light goes out.
I have attached wiring diagram, in case you have not got one. There is one each for "C" (US make) and "AB" (UK and Belgium make).
